Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEFIoE.
GEORGE W. WAGEONER, OF SCOTLAND OOUNTY, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO ANDREW R. CUSHMAN, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 139,093, dated May 20, 1873; application filed February 19, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, GEORGE W. WAGEONER, of Scotland county and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Washing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and complete description of its construction and operation, referen ce bcin g had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the sash-frame. Fig. 3 is a top view of the wash-board. Fig. 4 is a transverse section of the roller I and washboard and rollers therein.
Construction.
I take a wash-box, A, with legs B B B, and large corrugated roller I, placed across the box A at its center and within the box, as seen in Fig. 1. I then construct a sash-frame of the several parts 0 G, D D, E, and J, and treadle F F F, and attach arms H H H to roller I, as seen in Fig. 1; also, a wash-board frame, L L, rollers O O O, beveled boards P P, and rollers O O, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. I make springs ff and place them on top of box A, and passing through under bar E between parts (3 O and D D of the sash-frame, Fig. 1. The wash-board is placed within the box A so as to bring the central roller 0 under the center of roller I, and it is secured in place by bolts or screws passing through the ends of L L into the box A, so as to let the end under the roller I rise and fall. Wash-board L L, Fig. 3, is attached to the sash-frame G O by inserting tenons N N, Fig. 2, in slots M M, Fig. 3, and passing a bolt or pin through them. Treadle F is placed upon round K of box A,
Fig. 1, and round J of the sash-frame passes through it, as shown in Fig. 1.
Operation.
The box A being partly filled with water, the fabrics to be washed are then put in the box. By bearing the treadle F down the space between the roller I and the wash-board and rollers is opened to allow the fabrics to be washed to be passed between the roller I and wash-board and rollers. The treadle being released, the springs f f hold the wash-board and rollers up against the roller I, when the roller I is rotated, by means of arms H, back and forth until the operation of washing is completed.
The rollers O O are placed at the outer edge of beveled boards P P, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, to prevent injury to the fabrics and friction upon the beveled boards P P.
Disclaimer. I disclaim the use of the wash-box A, roller I, and smooth rollers O O 0, because the same have been used heretofore by others.
Claim.
Iclaim- V The combination and arrangement of the several parts, as follows: Roller I, wash-board frame L L, rollers O O O, bevel boards P P, rollers O O, sash-frame O O, D D, and E,
treadle F, and springs f f, when constructed
