To allwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALVIN J. BASSETT, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county ofMilwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Producers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in gas producers of that type shown in my Patent No. 1,098,875 issued to me June 2, 1914, and comprising an insu lated and jacketed combustion and generat ing chamber into the top of which coal is fed from a suitable hopper, means being provided at the to of the chamber for takmg off the gas pro uced therein by the usual combustion and disintegration rocess, my invention residing more particu arly in the means for feeding the coal into the combustion chamber. j i It is the object of my invention to provide an improved arrangement, controlled by a single feed valve for discharging the fuel into the combustion chamber at a plurality of points to thus rocure a more even and more nearly level istribution of fuel in the chamber, it being appreciated that in the operation of a producer of this character, a thick bed of fuel is maintained in the chamber to efi'ect the proper gas forming action.
It is more particularly my object to provide an arrangement for feeding the fuel into the top of the chamber at a plurality of points wherein the discharge of the fuel is effected by gravity from the usual valve controlled charging hopper disposed on the top of the producer chamber.
A further object resides in the provision of an arrangement whereby the charging hopper for the reducing chamber is disposed in such position as to prevent the possibility of premature disintegration of the fuel therein due to heat generated in the chamber, and it is still further my object in this connection to provide a maximum amount of gas space whereby to insure an even flow of gas from the apparatus.
A still further object resides in the provision of an improved jacketing structure for the combustion chamber.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, which will be apparent as the description proceeds, my invention resides more particularly in the novel combinat on, formationand arrangement of parts, whleh Wlll be hereinafter more particularly desorlbed and defined by the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through the upper portion of a gas producer ponstructed in accordance with my invenion.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the combustion chamber of my producer is formed by a cylindrical wall 10 of fire brick or other heat resisting material, and disposed about this wall, in slightlv spaced relation thereto is acylindrical mtallicshell 11. A second shell 12 is disposed about the shell 11in spaced relation thereto forming an annular chamber into which air for the supply to the combustion chamber is drawn and moistened as set out in my said previous patent. The top of the chamber is closed by a lower plate 13 which, in conjunction with a plate 14 disposed tl1ereabove forms a steam generating chamber in communication with the jacket space of a jacketed tubular throat 15 carried by and dependingfrom the apertured central portion of the top plate. A gas pipe 16 is secured to the upper end of the inner wall of the throat and is directed through the top plate 14 and then laterally for connection with the usual cleansing apparatus employed with producers of this character. All of the afore-recited structure is substantially the same as shown in my aforementioned patent, with the exception that the fire brick wall or lining 10 has been heretofore fitted directly against the cylindrical shell, 11, thus necessitating an accurate fitting. In the present structure the fire brick wall is built up in spaced relation to the shell and the space between the wall and shell is filled with sand 10 or other fluent heat resisting and insulating material.
The plate 13 is provided with a series of radially spaced apertures 17 opening into the top of the combustion chamber, there being four apertures provided in the present embodiment of my invention, and a series of upwardly convergent discharge tubes 18 have their lower ends secured on the plate 13 about these apertures, said tubes extending through the top plate 14, which is provided with suitable paekings l8 thereabout,
and the lower ends of the tubes are secured to and communicate with the bottom of a distribution chamber 19, said tubes thus forming downwardly divergent branches of said chamber. A charging hopper 20 of preferably conventional type is disposed on this chamber 19 and is provided with the usual disk valve 21 in its bottomcontrolled by a suitable lever mechanism 22. The distributing chamber 19 and the charging hopper are thus spaced a considerable distance above the top of the combustion chamber and in axial balance therewith, the gas delivery pipe 16 extending between a pair of the distributing tubes 18, which also, it is noted, form supporting legs for the hopper and distributing chamber.
A simple and efficient device is thus provided for feeding finely divided coal or other fuel to the combustion chamber in such manner as to procure an even and fairly level distribution of fuel in the combustion chamber, and it is noted that the tubes 18 and the distributing chamber 19 form storage spaces for surplus gas generated in the combustion chamber, whereby in conjunction with the pocketing action procured by the downward extension of the throat 15 into the combustion chamber, the generated gas tends to pass through said throat and thence through the delivery pipe in a continuous and even flow. Also, by spacing the charging hopper above the combustion chamber, which is procured by the interposition of a distributing structure between the hopper and combustion chamber, the possibility of premature disintegration of the fuel charge is prevented.
While I have shown and described a preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be appreciated that various changes and modifications of structure may be employed to meet differing conditions of use and manufacture without departing in any manner from the spirit of my invention, and it will be further noted that although my improved arrangement for charging the combustion chamber procures decided advantages of simplicity and efiicieney in connection with the depending gas delivery throat 15, the major advantages of my invention are procured irrespective of the manner of delivering the gas, and may as well be employed in structures where the gas is taken from the side of the top of the combustion chamber.

In a gas producer of the character described, the combination of a combustion chamber provided with a series of fuel discharge openings in its top, tubes extending convergently upward from said fuel discharge openings, a cylindrical chamber having its bottom supported on and communicating with said tubes, a hopper mounted on said distributing chamber and having its diameter approximating the diameter of the distributing chamber, and having a reduced discharge mouth communicating with the top of the distributing chamber and a vertically movable valve member for closing said discharge mouth, said valve member being adapted to shed fuel into the distributing chamber whereby to facilitate passage of said fuel through the tubes.
