Specification of Letters Patent. Patgnted Sept jfi, 1921,
Application filed August 8, 1919. Serial No. 316,114;
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEX HoovnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Belle F ourche, in the county of Butte and State of South Dakota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Phonographic Reproducers, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my present invention is the provision of a durable and eflicient device for reproducing to advantage phonographio records of various types without the necessity of changing the position of any of its parts or changing the needle.
To the attainment of the foregoing object and other advantageous characteristics hereinafter set forth herein, the invention consists in the peculiar and advantageous reproducer described and claimed in the following:
In the accompanying drawings, hereby made a part hereof:
Figure 1 is a diametrical section of the reproducer constituting the best practical embodiment of my invention that I have as yet devised. 7
Figs. 2 and 3 are sections on the lines 22 and 33, respectively, of Fig. 1.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
Among other elements my novel reproducer comprises a sound-box shell 1. This shell 1 is preferably, though not necessarily, of circular form in cross-section. At its lower end the shell is flanged, as indicated b 2.
Seated in the upper and lower portions of the shell are gaskets 3 and 4, of leather or other appropriate material.-
In addition to the shell characterized as described, my novel reproducer comprises a post 6 which is preferably of aluminum, though it may be of any other metal or al- 10y without affecting my invention. At the upper end of the post 6 is a threaded stem 7 which extends through the central apertures in the ordinary diaphragm 5 and auxiliary diaphragms 5 as well as through spacing washers 5 and a nut 8.
In the lower end of the post 6 is a socket 6 to receive a needle or stylus 6, and at 16 is a set screw for detachably fixing the needle or stylus in the said socket.
Surrounding the stem 7 above the main diaphragm 5 is a spider 10 the arms of which terminate in depending fingers 11, superimposed upon said diaphragm. This spider serves the important purpose .of adapting the reproducer for use in conjunction with records of the laterally-waving groove type.
An important feature of my invention resides in the fact that by the employment of the several diaphragms and the packing 3 and 4, the post 6 is adequately maintained in working position in such manner that all scratching sounds as well as metallic sounds are practically eliminated.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desireto secure by Letters-Patent, is;
A reproducer comprising a shell, a plural.- ity of diaphragms in the shell and spaced from each other and the shell, aneedle post extending transversely through and secured in the central portions of and carried solely by the said diaphragms and projecting forwardly from the foremost diaphragm and adapted .to carry a needle at its forward end; said needle post having an enlargement opposed to the forward sideof the foremost diaphragm, spacing washers on the post and between the diaphragms, and a spider surrounding and carried by the post and spaced 7 from the rear side of the foremost diaphragm and having fingers opposed to said rear side of the foremost diaphragm.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
ALEX HOOVER.
