To all 'whom t may concern:
' take4 more in Be it known that I, OBRA E. BYRON, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Pole-Trailers, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to pole trailers and has for its object the provision of an apparatus of this kind constructed in such a manner that the flexibility and automatic adjustability of its parts are such as to accommodate for the peculiar uses to which the device is put. To this end the device has means upon which the poles, such as telegraph poles and the likeJ may be placed, rollers being preferably provided to facilif tate the reception of the poles. This pole receiving carriage is so mounted on the trailer that it may swing a certain predetermined distance in either a horizontal plane or a vertical plane whereby thislpole carriage, within certain limitations, may practically universally adjust itself to the condition of its load.. The trailer is also so arranged that proper accommodation is made for the warping of the body of the trailer when drawn over rough surfaces. I will explain one form which my invention may detail by referring to the accompanying drawings illustrating such em bodiment in which- Figure 1 is a top view of my improved trailer;

My improved device comprises a frame work consisting of the channels 10 and 11 which at their right hand extremities (Fig. l1) are united by a bolster 12 shown more clearly in Fig. 3. The channels 13 and 14 serve as cross pieces to make this frame work rigid, gusset plates as seen more clearly from Figs. 1 and 2. A shaft 16 for carrying eye 1 whereby it may be suitably drawn is mounted between Specification of Letters Patent.

Additional holes 20v are provided in the shaft so as to adjust its protruding extremity to any desired length. This shaft projects rearwardly through the bolster as seen more clearly from Figs. l'. and 2 the shaft having a given play vertically within the hole provided for its reception in the bolster 12. Suitable wheels 21 are provided mounted upon the axle 22, this axle being united to the frame work of part,
by the radius rods 23 and 24. The radius rods at their forward extremities (Fig. 2)
are pivotally mounted as shown at 25 and are united to the rear axle at their forward extremities by knuckle joints 26. 'Ihe bolster 12 is rigidly secured to the transversely mounted spring 27, the extremities of this spring being pivotally carried by the links 28 and 29. These links 28 and 29 are pivotally held by the brackets 30 rigidly secured to the axle 22. The brackets 30 are also provided on their top surface with cushioning springs 31 and 32 which coperate with shelves 33 rigidly secured to the opposite ends of the bolster 12. As this bolster is mounted upon the sprin its central portion it will be seen t at this bolster may tilt in*a vertical plane so that one or the other of the shelves 33 may come into contact with its corresponding spring 31 or 32. A pole carriage 34 is mounte upon the top of the bolster 12 and this pole carriage consists in part of the I-beams 35 to ether with uprights 36 and 37. l
uitable angles 38 and 39 are mounted on top of the I-beam as more clearly shown in Figs. 4 and 5 and support rollers 40. These rollers facilitate putting the poles in position upon the said carriage. Small channels 41 are utilized to provide a irm bearing for the shaft 42 which supports the rollers. Straps 43 are provided so thatadditional uprights may be mounted in position 1f desired. The pole carriage is so arranged that it may swing in a' horizontal plane as more clearly indicated by dotted lines in Fig, 1, and the limit of this movement is governed by the stops 44. In order to pivotally mount the I-beam in position it is provided with a cast strap 45 having a central hollow bore, this strap being suitably held in place by rivets 46. The strap is pivotally mounted upon Q y weones in Fig. 6. A portion of the l-beam is broken away as shown at e8 so] as to permit swinging of this l-beam and hence the pole carriage about the stud 47 as a pivot. From the description thus tar given it will be seen that the pole carriage 34 may adjust itself into practically any position in accordance with its load. From what has been vdescribed the above mentioned advantages and others will vbe clearly apparent to those skilled in the art. Many modifications may, of course,
be made without departing from the spirit' of my invention however and within the scope of the appended claims.
