Be it known that I, J ULIUs FRIED, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dental Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to dental apparatus, and has for an object to provide a device adapted for attachmentfto the hand piece of a dental engine for the purpose of collecting in a single receptacle the particles which are driven off during the act of grinding porcelain teeth, gold crowns, etc. Another object of the invention is to provide an attachment for the purpose above -set forth including means to pa'rtly'inclose thegrinding wheell which may be associated with the hand piece, and means for creating a vacuum in the vicinity of the grinding wheel whereby to collect all the particles which are driven off during the act of grinding porcelain teeth` gold crowns and the like and for depositing the particles in a single receptacle for a purpose to be pres--y ently noted.

Mounted upon the outer end of shaft 28 is a relatively Vsmall pinion 30 which is in meshing engagement with a relatively large pinion 32 which isA adapted to be mounted upon the spindle 12 of the grinding wheel. The pinion 32 may be either formed so as'to be vremovably applied to the spindle, or it may be formed integrally with the' spindle as desired. As stated abovegthe lugs 18 and 19 are interfitting, and are apertured to receive abolt 33 which is formed at one end witha handle 34, a nut 35 being applied to the other end. A lug 36 is formed integrally with one lug 19 so asto hold the nut 35 against rotation. Extending tangentially from the casing 22 is an outletconduit 37 which is curved rearwardly and formed with a flange 38 to which the flange 39 of a cylindrical perforated casing 40 is applied. The ange 39 may have radial lugs 41 to enter the recesses of enlargements 42 formed-upon the flange 38 whereby the casing 40 may be secured to the extension 37. by applying the same thereto and by rotating the casing 40 slightly to cause interengagement of the enlargements 42 and lugs 41.
The bag 43 of fabric or the likeis inclosed within the casing 40 and the mouth of the bag is caught between the flanges 38 and 39, thereby establishing communication between the interior of the bag and theinterior of the blower casing 22.
From the foregoing description it will be obvious that rotation of the spindle 12 will be communicated through the pinion 32, and pinion to the blower shaft 29, setting the latter in rotation at a relatively high rate of speed whereby to create a suction through the shield 24, expelling the air through the curved extension 37 into the bag 4 3 which becomes distended. During the act of grind- 'ing porcelain teeth, gold crowns or other work the particles which are released will be caught in the current of air traveling inwardly, through the shield 24 and carried into the bag 43 and retained therein. Thus, the gold particle driven od during the act of grinding the gold crowns or other work formed of precious metals, and which par, ticles have hitherto been lost, may now be collected inthe bag 43 and subsequently recovered. Tt will also be apparent, that since all particles are collected, the act of grinding with this apparatus is rendered safe to the operator, since heretofore the particles driven od" have been breathed in by the ope'rator, thereby resulting in discomfort and pulmonary diseases. vWhen the spindle 12 is to be inserted in the chuck 11, or when one spindle or grinding wheell is to be substituted for another the handle 34 is swung so as to release the bolt 33, thereby permitting the blowers casing, shield 24 and casing 40 to be `thrown back in an arc of a circle about the bolt 33 as a center. The pinions 30 and 32 will thus be, disengaged, and obviously when the blower is returned to normal psition` the pinions will automatically be rengaged. Thus, the flange 31 prevents the accidental displacement of .the sleeve 15 from the chuck, the set-screw 14 acting conjointly to prevent rotation -of the sleeve.

`With a slight variation my invention may be applied to a dental lathe used in the laboratory in which event the spindle 12 is driven directly from the motor shaft or other rotating part of the lathe, and the'shield 25 is used to partly inclose the grinding wheel or other tool used upon the lathe. The conventional type of lathe employed for dental purposes merely comprises a motor, the shaft of which is extended to receive the grinding wheel or other tool to be used. Having described myinvention, what ll claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. Tn combination withadental han'dpiece, a sleeve to encircle the same, a lug 'formed on said sleeve, a second lug pivotally connected to the first, and a shield, blower casing and receptacle mounted on said second lug for movement relative to the hand piece. x
2. Tn combination with a dental hand piece, means for embracing the Same, a blower casing and shield in connection therewith to receive the tool mounted in the chuck of the hand piece, and means for piv-v otally connecting said blower casing to the blower casing pivotally mounted` on the sleeve, a shield connected to the blower casing to receive va tool mounted in the chuck, and a casing to receive waste. material secured to the blower casing and normally extending parallel to the hand piece when a device is in use, the casing being movable to a position substantially at right angles to the hand piece to remove the shield from the tool to permit adjustment of the latter.
4. In combination with a dental hand piece,P a sleeve to encircle the chuck thereof, an apertured'lug formed onsaid sleeve, a blower casing including an end plate, an. apertured lug formed on said end plate, a bolt entering said lug to pivotally mount the blower casing, a shield secured to the blower casing, said blower casing having a lateral 'curved outlet, a cylindrical casing of rigid material secured to the outlet and eX- tending normally parallel to the hand piece .in spaced relation thereto, and a bag of fabric held within the cylindrical casing in communication with the outlet.
5. In combination with a dental hand piece, a sleeve for encircling 4the chuck thereof, a tool spindle inserted in the chuck, a gear mounted on said spindle, a blower casing pivotally mounted on the sleeve, a gear wheel forming a part of the blower mechanism, a disk forming part of said second gear to engage the rear face of the first gear to prevent accidental dislodgement of the sleeve when the gears are in mesh, and a' shield forming part ofthe casing to encircle a tool held upon the spindle.

plate forming part of the shield and disposed in spaced relation to the gear, a blower casing and blower mechanism" pivotally mounted on the sleeve, a gear wheel forming part of the blower mechanism, a disk secured to the rear face of said second gear and extending beyond the periphery thereof to enter the space between4 the first gear and the plate, and a shield forming part ofthe blower casing to receive a tool mounted upon the spindle. 7 A dental apparatus including a sleeve, a blower casing having an inlet, and a tangential outlet, a shield frictionally held upon the inlet, means for pivotally mounting the blower casing upon the sleeve, a blower within the casing,'a gear for operating the blower mounted exteriorly of the casing, and .a casing of rigid material secured to the outlet of said blower casing.
