IMPROVEMENT IN EDGE-PLANES FOR TRIMMING THE SOLES AND WELTS 0F BOOTS AND SHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 139,034, dated May 20, 1873; application iled September 28, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN J. TAYMAN, of the city of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in a Hand-Plane for Trimming theSoles and Welts of Boots and Shoes, of which the following is a specication:
My invention relates, mainly, to the combination of a knife for trimming the soles, and a cutter for trimming the welts, and a gage, guard, and lip with the cutter-stock. The invention also relates to an opening in the guard for the passage of shavin gs from the weltcutter.
Figures l and 2 are side views, at right angles to each other, of the improved tool. Fig. 3 is an end view of the same. Figs. 4 and 5 are views, at right angles to each other, of the gage C. Figs. 6 and 7 are like views of the guard D. Figs. 8 and 9 are like views of the knife E. Figs. 10 and 1l are like views of the welt-cutter F.
Like letters in all the ligures indicate the same parts.
A is the stock, and B the handle. C is the gage; D, the guard 3 E, the knife for trimming the soles; and F, the cutter for trimming the welts, all of which are shown in detail from Figs. 4 to 1l, inclusive. The. guard D is provided with an opening, a, for the passage of the shavings from the welt-cutter. The entire edge of the guard is left smooth and eventhroughout to prevent injury to the upper, the
opening a being a short distance from the edge, Y
as represented in the drawing. The gage (l is fastened, by means of the screw b, to the stock A. The knife E is placed in the grooves c c of the stock A and guard D, and confined therein by means of the screw b. The Weltcutter is placed in the diagonal groove d of thed and set-screw b', substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
