Description

F. W. WOLTEH.
CLEVIS ATTACHMENT FOR FLOWS- APPLICATION FILED FEB.13.1920.

NITED FRED W. WOLTER, 0F CUERO, TEXAS.
CLEVIS ATTACHMENT FDR PLONSQ ee s-4o.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 6, 12921..
Application filed February 13, 1926. Serial No. 358,320.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED W. IVoLrnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cuero in the county of De Witt and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Clovis Attachment for Plows, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in clevises and more particularly to a device of this character especially designed for attachment to plows whereby to facilitate suchvariations in the line of draft as to properly gage the depth of the plow point when working in different kinds of ground.
A further object is the provision of an adjustable clevis attachment for plows which, due to its simplicity and comparatively small number of parts may be readily applied to substantially any conventional type of plow and which, when applied, is conveniently ac cessible and operable by the plow operator.
With these and other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds the invention comprises the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described in the following specification and set forth with particularity in the claims appended hereto.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the invention applied to use.
Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of the sectional and adjustable segment supporting plate removed.
Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 5 indicates a conventional type of plow equipped with the usual draft beam 6 and the rearwardly diverging hanhles 7, the front terminal of the draft beam 6 being provided, as usual, with draft plates 8 pivotally connected at 9 with the terminal of the beam.
In applying my invention to the plow, a pair of forwardly converging brace rods 10 are secured at their rear terminals to the opposed handles 7 and are connected at their forward extremities with the beam 6 directly above the foot thereof. A V-shaped attachin cli 11 is rigidly fastened to the vertica ly fisposed portion of the beam 6 and supports a bearing plate 12 for the upwardly extending hand lever 13.
The hand lever is provided with an approvedtype of locking device 13 designed to cooperate with a rack segment 14: which is bolted or otherwise secured at one terminal to the beam 6 and is adjustably secured at its opposite terminal by a bolt or equivalent fastening element 1 1 passed transversely through the registering slots 17 formed in a pair of companion supporting members 15 the terminals of which are recessed at 16 to accommodate the opposed brace rods 10 whereby the rear terminal of the segment 14 is supported in operative position. The bolt by which the terminal of the segment 14 is fastened is also utilized to clamp the companion plates 15 together to maintain relative adjustment thereof and the terminals of the plates are preferably provided with depending fingers which embrace the rods 10 and are apertured to accommodate bolts whereby the plates are maintained in adjusted position with relation to the brace rods.
The relative adjustment of the companion plates 15 is essential owing to the fact that the distance between the rods 10 varies according to the space between the plow handles on various types of plows.
The upper and lower portions of the clevis plates 8 are connected with links 18 having connection with the upper and lower terminals of parallel cross arms 19. A coupling plate 20 is connected with the lower extremities of the arms 19 and is provided with a series of spaced apertures 21 adapted to selectively receive the angular front terminal of a connecting rod 22 which extends rearwardly from the plate 20 beneath the plow beam 6 and is connected with the hand lever 13 at a point intermediate the segment 14 and the supporting plate 12.
From the foregoing it is evident that I have provided a clevis attachment for plows permitting quick and convenient adjustment of the clevis plates with relation to the draft beam whereby the depth of the plow point may be varied as desired and furthermore, due to the comparatively small number of parts and their simple construction it is possible to conveniently apply the attachment to practically any conventional type of low.
at I claim is:
1. A draft clevis attachment for plows comprising pivoted clevis plates, a hand lever, parallel cross arms, links connecting the cross arms with the clevis plates, a coupling plate secured between the extremities of the cross arms having a series of apertures therein, means connecting the hand lever with the coupling plate and selectively engageable in any one of the apertures therein, and means for locking the lever in adjusted position.
2. In a clevis attachment, a pivoted hand lever, means connecting the hand lever with the clevis, means for locking the hand lever in adjusted position, said locking means including a rack segment, brace rods attachable to the handles and beam of a plow, and adjustable companion plates engaged with the brace rods and supporting the segment.
3. In a clevis attachment, a hand lever, means connecting the hand lever with the clevis, brace rods attachable to the handle and beam of a plow, adjustable supporting plates detachably engage with the brace rods, and means to lock the lever in adjusted position, said locking means including a rack segment supported at one terminal by the adjustable plates and engageable at its opposite terminal with a plow beam.
4:. In a clevis attachment, a hand lever, means connecting the hand lever with the clevis, means for pivotally attaching the hand lever to a plow beam, companion brace rods attachable to the handle and beam of a plow, companion supporting plates provided with registering longitudinal slots, terminal fingers carried by the companion plates embracing the brace rods, said plates being capable of independent adjustment to compensate for variations in the angularity of the brace rods, a rack segment attachable at one terminal to a plow beam, means carried by the lever and coacting with the segment to maintain the lever in adjusted position, and means carried by the rack segment coacting with the slotted portions of the companion plates to maintain the seg ment in position and to secure the plates in adjusted position.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature hereto.
FRED W. WOLTER.
