and one which can be manufactured at low' cost.
Another object of the invention is to provide a laminated tie of channel construction and provided with means for securing the rails thereto.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrate-d in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims. Y
ln describing` my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which :w
Figure l is a plan view of a tie made in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is an elevation showing the rails thereon.
Figs. 3', l and 5 are end views showing how the tie is made.
As shown in these views the tie l is of `channel shape in cross section with its flanges depending downwardly and the rails 2 resting upon the bight and being secured thereto by bolts 3. lnstead of these bolts l may Speecaton of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 6, 192i.

form tongues inthe tie to engage the rails or said rails may be secured to the tie in any other suitable manner.
The tie is formed of sheet metal which has its edge portions bent over upon its center portion to provide a body formed of three thicknesses of metal, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The side portions of this body are then bent at right angles to provide a channel-shaped member, as shown in Fig. 5. Thus atie of great strength is produced and one which can be manufactured at low cost. The tie may be provided with the holes l for receiving the rail attaching bolts.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
l desire it to be understood that l may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is l. A tie of the character described cornprising a body formed of several thicknesses cf sheet metal with its side portions bent at right angles to its central portion to produce a laminated tie of channel shape in cross section.
2. The herein described process of form ing a tie consisting in folding the side por tions of a sheet of metal upon the center portion to secure a body of three thicknesses of metal and then bending the side portions of said body at right angles to form a channel shaped tie. Y
In testimony whereof I aiiiX lmy signature ERASTUS H. BENN.
