To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT M. BAIRD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have invented new and useful Improvements in Demountable-R-im Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to demountable rims for vehicle wheels, and more particularly to improved locking means for holding such rims in position.
Specifically, the present invention relates to demountable rim locks of the type shown in my prior copending application, Serial No. 246,822, filed July 26, 1918, and is in the nature of an improvement on the device of such application. 1
Among the objects of the present invention are to simplify the construction, without in any way impairing its efliciency, to improve the appearance and ease of operation, and to provide an effective rim lockof this character having a minimum number of parts.
l/Vith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary inside elevation of a part of a wheel equipped with my improved rim locking device;

Fig. 3 is a fragmentary plan view of a demountable rim constructed in accordance with my invention and showing one of my improved attaching lugs;
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the portion of wheel shown in Fig. 1; and
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary face view of a portion of the wheel before the demountable rim is placed in position thereon, showing a slot adapted to receive my improved attaching lug.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 1 designates the usual wooden felly and 2 the spokes. The wooden felly is surrounded by a tight fitting rim or band 3 which is preferably constructed with the inner edge thereof thickened and beveled as indicated at 3*.
The demountable rim is designated in its entirety by the reference character 4. It is provided on its inner surface with a spacing head 4* adapted to engage the band 3, and with a beveled surface 5 adapted to cooper- Specification of Letters Fatent.

Inorder to hold the demountable rim in position on the felly, I provide such rim with a series of attaching lugs 6, preferably of skeleton form as shown in Fig. 3. These lugs are spaced slightly from and extend parallel with the inner face of the demountable I'lIIl. They are rigidly secured at one end directly to such rim, adjacent the outer edge thereof as indicated at 7 The lugs may be formed integral with the rim or may be attached thereto by any suitable means, such for example as weldi g.
The lugs 6 are provided adjacent their free ends with a slot or opening 8 and are of such length that when applied to the felly in the manner hereinafter described, such opening or slot 8 projects beyond the inside face of the felly as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
The band 8'is provided at its outer edge with a series of notches 9 corresponding in size and position with the lugs 6, and adj acent each notch 9 the felly 1 is cut away to form a slot 10 of the same width as the notch 9, which slot extends transversely through the felly from one side to the other underneath the band 8. It will be seen, therefore, that when the demountable rim, constructed as described, is applied to the felly, and is moved axially in a direction opposite to that of the arrow in. Fig. 2, the lugs 6 enter the slots 10, and in the .final position of the demountable rim the side portions of the lugs 6 seat in the notches 9 formed in the band 3. This serves to key the felly, band and rim together and hold them against circumferential shifting.
In order to secure the rim in position as shown in Fig. 2, I provide a series of looking devices or latches 11, shaped as shown in Fig. 1. Each of these latches is in the form of a lever having adjacent its free end a projection 12 adapted to enter the opening 8 in the lug 6. Eachlatch 11 is pivotally mounted on a bolt 14; passing through the felly 1 and is preferably located at the inner side of the felly. The upper portion of the latch is curved as indicated at 13 so as to conform to the shape of the felly.
The end of the latch adjacent its pivot is cut away at the center so as to form a pair of resilient arms 15 and these arms grip or embrace at their ends a flattened portion 16 of the bolt 14. This bolt 14 is of course provided with the usual head 17 as shown in Fig. 2, but this head is omitted in Fig. 1 so as to clearly show the shape of the flattened portion 16 which is adjacent the same. It will be seen, therefore, that whenthe latch 11 is rotated slightly on its pivot the flattened portion 16 of thebolt will force the resilient arms 15 apart and this results in a tendency o-f'the latch to return to the locking position shown in Fig. 1. In other words, the spring arms 15, gripping the flattened portion 16 of the bolt between them serve as resilient means for holding the latch in looking position. When, however, the latch has been swung a considerable distance from its normal position to or beyond the position indicated for example in dotted lines in Fig. 1, the spring arms engage the rounded portion of the bolt and therefore there is no longer any tendency for the latch to be returned. Inother words, after the latchhas been moved a certain distance it will then remain in open or release position. From the above it will be observed that the spring means for retaining the latch in position are embodied in the latch itself and the construction is thus greatly simplified.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a demountable rim structure and locking device therefor of exceedingly simple and effective construction, containing a minimum number of parts, and at the same time presenting a neat appearance, and it is thought that the many advantages of my invention will befully appreciated by those skilled in such matters, without further discussion.
What I claim is 1. The combination with a wheel comprising a. felly and band, of a demountable rim fitting over said band, and means for re taining said rim in position, said means including an attaching lug secured at one end to the rim and extending parallel with but spaced from the inner face of the rim, said felly having a transverse slot extending therethrough adjacent the band, in which slot said lug is received between the felly and band, and said band having a notch in its edge adjacent said slot, in Which notch said lug seats, whereby said felly, band and rim are all keyed together at one point by said lug.
2. The combination with a wheel felly having a transversely disposed slot, of a demountable rim therefor and means for securing said rim in position, said means comprising a lug carried by the rim and passing through said slot, with its end extending beyond the face of the felly, said lug having an opening through such extended end, and a latch pivoted to the felly and having a projecting portion adapted to engage in the opening in said lug, and thus lock the parts together. f
3. The combination with a wheel felly having a transverse slot, of means for securing a demountable thereon, said means comprising a lug carried by therim and constructed to pass through said slot and project beyond the face of the felly, a latch pivoted to the'felly and adapted to engage the projecting end of said lug to lock the parts together, and spring means forming part of the latch itself for resiliently holding the latch in locking position.

having a transverse slot, of means "for securing a demountable rim thereon, said means comprising a lug carried by the rim and constructed to pass through said slot and project beyond the face ofthe felly, a latch adapted to engage the projecting end of said lug to lock the parts together, said latch comprising a pair of resilient arms, and a pivot pin carried by the felly and having a flattened portion embraced by the adjacent ends of said resilient arms, where by the latch is yieldingly held in lockingposition.
