DEMOUNT RIM? APPLICATION HL 8. a, 19-19. 1,340,671.
IIIIllllllllllllllllllulllll Dbl/876501 1.7. S. Berce Patentefllay 18, 1920.
UNITED STATES PATENT oEFIo JAMES S. PIERCE, OF DUNKIRK, NEW YORK.
Application filed February 8, 1919.
part 8 adapted to slide on bolt 3. When the To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMEs S. PIERCE, of Dunkirk, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented certaln new and useful.Im1: rovements in Demountable Rims; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My object is to provide a simple and effective locking device for demountable rims.
' In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation, Fig. 2 an end view and Fig. 8 a section on line 3-'3, Fig. 1.
The wheel felly 1 is shown equipped with a fixed band 2 on which a demountable rim may be mounted.
A bolt 8 is shown extending transversely through the felly and projecting from one. side sufficiently to form a bearing for the locking device 4. This consists of an angular plate having a lateral portion 5 movable in a channel iron 6 extending transversely of, and secured to, the inner side of the felly.
- The plate 5 is formed with a lug 7.
The locking device also has an upright member 8 mounted to slide on bolt 3, being shown bored through to receive the bolt. The part 8 terminates in a right angular wedge-shaped extremity 9 which extends inward over the band 2 and cooperates with this band to form the seat for a tire rim.
The wedge 9 is shown formed with a slightly curved extension 10 to provide the appropriate formation to receive the rim.
A lever 12 is shown fulcrumed in ears 13 formed on plate 6 and extending inward from the telly. This lever has a cam head 1 1 adapted to engage the lug 7 on plate 5.
Thus it will be seen that the locking device 4. comprises a single rigid element or casting of substantially L-shape, having two substantially parallel parts, the plate 5 adapted to slide transversely of the telly in plate 6 and the wedge 9 to pass beneath a demountable rim, and also an intermediate Specification of Letters Patent.
1. DEMOUNTABLE RIM.
Patented May 18, 1920.
Serial No. 275,772.
parts are in the full line position shown the lever 12 extends toward the axis of the wheel and cam head 14 bears against, lug'7, and also binds plate 5 against the felly, thus holding the device in the locking position. The bolt 3 provides a brace for the angularplate and tends to prevent undue strain. By turning lever 12 to the left, Fig. 1, the cam head is moved out of en agement with lug? and plate 5 and the entire locking device is free to be moved outward on bolt 3 and the rim released. It will be understood that the wheel will be equipped with a sufficient number of the described looking devices to securely hold the rim.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a wheel folly, of a channel plate secured to the inner side of said i'elly, and a bolt extending transversely through and beyond the telly, of a substan tially L-shape locking device having its body portion bored to receive said bolt, the longer lateral portion of said device being movable in said channel plate, and the shorter lateral portion adapted to engage a demountable rim, and means for holding said device in looking position.
- 2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a wheel felly, of a channel plate secured to the inner side of said felly, and a bolt extending transversely through and beyond the telly, and having a cam lever fulcrumed on said channel plate, of a plate movable in said channel plate having a lug, the face of said plate and said In testimony whereof I have signed this JAMES s. PIERCE.
