UNITED STATES PATEN'I' L1G WILLIAM H. EVANS,
OF JOLIET, ILLINOIS.
GUIDING DEVICE FOR SLEDS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. EVANS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Joliet, in the county of Will and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improveinents in Guiding Devices for Sleds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a guiding device for sleds and has for its primary object the construction of a device of this character that may be operated with very little effort and when operated gives immediate guiding action to the sled.
An object of the invention is the use of a third runner so arranged and constructed that upon displacement the sled may be quickly guided to the right or left and when the t ird runner is not subject to hand pres sure will assume a normal position that will not interfere with the straight travel of the sled.
With these and other objects in view the invention will be better understood from the following detailed descripton taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein- Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a sled showing my invention connected thereto.
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the device constructed in its simplest form.
Again referring to the drawing illustrat ing my invention the numeral 1 designates a sled of ordinary construction to which my invention is connected. The numeral 2 designates the third runner shorter than the runners of the sled and projecting slightly below the runners 3 of the sled so as to accomplish a more efiective grip between it and the ground than between the runners 3 and the ground so that the latter may be effectively guided in a manner hereinafter de- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 6, 1921. 1920. Serial No. 379,894.
a shaft9 which is in turn journaled in the plate 10 secured to the top of the sled. A handle 11 con nected to the shaft allows the shaft to be actuated which, due to its crank portion, throws the lever 4 about its pivot and thereby displaces the runner 2 for guiding the sled either to the right or left depending upon the position that the runner 2 has assumed.
In Fig. 4 I have illustrated my invention constructed in its simplest form consisting of a rod 12 provided at the central point with an opening 13 for the reception of the bolt 6 and having one end flattened and bent to form a runner 14 and its other end to form a crank 15, terminating in a ball 16 which will be gripped by the user of the sled for displacing the runner 14 and there by guide the sled to the right or left.
It is, of course, to be understood that the invention may be constructed in various other manners and the parts associated in dilferent relations and therefore, I do not desire to be limited in any manner except as set forth in the claim hereunto appended.
Having thus described my invention what claim is A guiding device for sleds comprising a lever, a bolt detachably and pivotally connecting the lever at a central point tothe sleds body, a runner connected to one end of the lever, saidlever having a slot formed in the other end, and an operating shaft journaled in the sleds body, and having a crank portion working in said slot.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
