ROTARY VALVE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all to 7mm it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS F. SooL- LARD, a citizen ofthe United States, resid ing at Warsaw, in the county of Kosciusko and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Rotary Valve, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention has reference to valve constructions, and more particularly to a novel form of valve of therotary type, to be employed in connection with internal combustion engines. I
The primary object of the invention is to provide a rotary valve having a'novel form of cooling means whereby a cooling fluid may be circulated through the valve proper to maintain the valve cool, thereby eliminating Sticking of the contacting members of the valve.
A further object of the invention is to provide means within the valve for retaining water therein, for a predetermined period,
to insure the cooling fluid contacting with the entireinner surface of the valve.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and'in the details of construction hereinafter de scribed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of out departing from the spirit of the inven tion.
Referring to the drawing 1- Figure 1 illustrates a longitudinal sectional view through a valve constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Fig. 2 illustrates a transverse sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Having reference to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 designates the casing of the valve which is provided with a flanged portion 6 formed integral with the lower extremity thereof, which flanged portion is provided with suitable openings to accommodate the securing members 7 which also pass through suitable openings formed in the flange 9 of the base 10.
The casing 5 includes the spaced outer walls 11 and inner walls 12, providing a continuous passage between the walls of the casing, the passageway being indicated by the reference character 13 and is in comedge of the pipe what is claimed, withcause the cooling of munication with the passageway 14: formed in the base 10, whereby the lower extremity of the valve proper may be cooled.
The inner surface of the casing is tapered to conform to the taper of the removable sleeve 15, which is disposed within the easing, the upper extremity thereof being supported in spaced relation with the removable cover 16 which. as shown is bolted to the casing as at 17.
The valve member includes the taperedwall 18 which contacts with the inner surface of the sleeve member 15 and as shown, this wall 18 is provided with an offset portion 19 disposed in spaced relation with the sleeve 15, to reduce the wear surface between the sleeve and wall 18.
Formlng a part of the valve member is a central pipe sectlon 20, which provides means of communication between the feed pipe 21 and the dischargeport 22, however it is to be understood that the feed pipe 21 discharges into the pocket 23 formed at the upper end of the valve. The upper 20 is inclined as at 2 1, while the opposed wall is inclined as at 25, to provide a tapered seat for the boss 26 which is also provided with inclined edges contacting with the inclined surfaces 24 and 25 to insure a water-tight connection between the upper end of the valve and the cover 27.
An opening 27 is formed in the cover 27, whereby steam generated in the valve member may mingle with the incoming gases to moisten the same.
The space between the pipe 20 and the wall 18 of the valve, provides a water passageway for permitting the water to pass into close contact with the valve proper to the surface thereof. lommunicating with the water passageway, and extending through the cover 27 is a feed pipe 28 which has connection with a suitable water supply, whereby water may be fed to the valve member, the water pass ing through the valve member and passing outwardly therefrom through the pipe 29, where the same exhausts.
In order that the water will be maintained within the valve member, for a predetermined period, a partitioning sleeve 30 is provided, and as shown, this partitioning sleeve extends from the lower portion of the valve, upwardly, terminating at a point substantially intermediate the ends of the valve proper, the sleeve being disposed in spaced relation with both the pipe 20 and the inner surface of the offset portion 19.
Formed in the lower end of the pipe 20, is an opening 31 adapted to receive the key 32 for connecting the drive shaft 33 and the inner valve member, the drive shaft 33 be ing however, operated by suitable gearing, to cause the port 34 of the valve proper to register with the ports 35 and 36 of the sleeve and valve casing respectively.
Packing rings 37 are carried by the valve member proper, adjacent to the upper end thereof, which packing rings insure an absolute waterproof connection between the valve proper and the removable sleeve 15, the rings however being supported at the upper end of the valve proper, or at a point where the wear between the valve andits sleeve, is the greatest.
It might be further stated that a valve spring 37 is disposed between the cover 16 and cover 27, the spring being of the coil type and embraces the pin 8% so that tm cover 27 is urged into close engagement with the upper portion of the valve proper to insure against water or the cooling fluid passing into the valve member, and into the pocket 23.
In the operation of the device, the valve proper is rotated as heretofore described, and water passes into the passageway between the inner surface of the valve and outer surface of the pipe 20, whereupon the same flows over the upper edge of the sleeve 30 and passes outwardly through the pipe 29.
It is believed that in view of the foregoing description, a further detail descripcover rovering the upper portion of the valve member, means to permit movement of the valve member with relation to the cover, and a discharge pipe for .=arrying off the cooling fluid.

In a rotary valve, a casing, a valve within the casing, means member posi ione-d for rotating the valve member, a sleeve 1nterposed between the valve member and ms mg, means for supplying a cooling fluid to the interior of the valve member, said sleeve adapted to retain a portion of the cooling fluidin the valve member, said sleeve being disposed adjacent to the bottom of the valve member and extending upwardly terminating at the ends of the valve member, a cover covering the upper portion of the valve memher, and a discharge pipe for carrying off the cooling fluid.
