ROTARY-VALVE PACKING-nine.
Application filed May 2 To all whom may concern Be it known that I, FRANCIS E. Foumzn, a citizen of theUnited States of America, residing at Albany in the county of Albany and State or New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in R0- tary-Valve Packing-Rings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to packing rings for rotary valves and has for one or its objects the provision of a construction which surrounds the port in the valve on all sides and which automatically adjusts itself to engage the wall of the valve housing to take care of any wear which might occur. Other objects of the invention reside in the novel arrangements and combinations of parts as more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation or" a construction embodying .my invention;
Fig. 2 is a cross section on the line 22 of Fig. 1;
Figs. 3 and 4; are respectively side elevavations of the cooperating members 01" the packing ring;
1 is a hollow cylindrical rotary valve having the port 2 in its wall for controlling the passage of gas to or from a cylinder 3 of an internal combustion engine, this valve being rotatably mounted inside a head or sleeve i.
In order. to seal the port 2, the metallic This packing ring comprises the cooperating members 6 and 7 respectively having the annuli 8 and 9 at opposite ends of the cross bars 10 and 11 and integral therewith. These cross bars extend longitudinally of the rotary valve 1 and engage in longitudinal grooves 12 in its wall on opposite sides of the port 2, while the annuli engage in annular grooves 13 in its wall at opposite ends of the port. The arrangement is such that the bars and are nuli surround the port on all sides.
Specifically, the annuli of the cooperating member 7 of the metallic packing ring 5 rotatably engage the annuli 8 of the cooperat- This cooperating member 7 is positioned longitudinally upon the cooperating member 6 by the flanges 14 at the outer ends of the annuli 8 which are formed by reason of the remaining portions of the annuli 8 being of reduced diameter and substantially the same as the inner diameter of the annuli 9 of the cooperating member 7 Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Got. 4, 1921.
1320. Serial No. 384,584.
When the cooperating members are in assembled relation, the outer surfaces of the annuli 9, bars. 10 and 11 and flanges 1 1, substantially register. The annuli 8 and 9 are split transversely and the splits are preferably so arranged that the splits in the annuli of one of the members is on the side of the rotary valve opposite to the splits in the annuli oi the cooperating member when the parts are in assembled relation.
With the above arrangement, the cooperating members are rotatable relative to each other so that they may automatically position themselves to keep in constant contact with the wall of the head or sleeve in which the rotary valve is rotatably mounted. This is an important consideration, since the metallic packing ring may properly function under all working conditions and until the wear is such as to require replacement. Furtneremore, the packing ring may have a minimum amount of clearance at all points and still operate efficiently, due to its flexibility and automatic positioning. Still another point is that the cooperating members or the metallic packing ring form a unit and are longitudinally positioned with respect to each other without interfering with their relative rotation.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. The combination with a rotary valve, having a port therein, of a packing, comprising cooperating relatively rotatable members, each having a bar and annuli at opposite ends of said bar, said annuli surrounding said valve at the ends of the port and said bars being at the sides of said port.
2. The combination with a rotary valve, having a port therein of a metallic packing, comprising a member having a bar extending longitudinally of said valve and at one side of said port, and transversely split annuli at opposite ends of said bar and surrounding said valve at opposite ends of said port, and a cooperating member rotatably mounted upon said first-mentioned member and comprising a bar extending longitudinally of said valve and at the side of said port opposite to said first-mentioned bar and annuli at the opposite ends of said lastmentioned bar and rotatably engaging said first-mentioned annuli.
3. The combination with a hollow rotary valve having a port through its wall, and annular grooves at the end of said port and longitudinal grooves at the sides of said port and connecting into said annular grooves, of a metallic packing engageable over said valves;
comprising annuli engageable in said annular grooves, and a cross bar between, said annuli engageable in one of said longitudinal grooves, and a cooperating member having annuli rotatably mounted on said firstmentioned annuli and a cross bar betweeen said last-mentioned annuli and engaging in the other of said longitudinal grooves, all of said annuli being transversely split.
4:. The combination with a hollow cylindrical rotary valve having a port through its wall, and annular grooves at the ends of said port and longitudinal grooves at the sides of said port and connecting into said annular grooves, of a packing engageable over sald valve as a unit, eomprlsing a member having annuli engaging in said annular V grooves, and a cross bar engaging in one of said longitudinal grooves, said annuli having portions of reduced diameter and forming flanges at their outer ends, said packing also comprising a cooperating member having annuli rotatably mounted on said vfirstmentioned annuli and between said flanges and a cross bar engaging in the other of said longitudinal grooves, the outer surfaces of said last-mentioned annuli, cross bars, and flanges substantially registering.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
FRANCIS E. FOULKE.
