FREDERICK STRATTNER, OF WILMINGTON, DELAWARE.
IMPROVEMENT IN TIRE-HEATERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,952, dated May 13, 1873; application filed March 22, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Beitknown that I, FREDERICK STRATTNER, residing in Wilmington, in the county of New Castle and State of Delaware, have invented a new and Improved Tire-Heater, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal section of my improved heater, and a transverse section of the upper part of the case which receives the tire; and Fig. 2 illustrates a side elevation of the tire-case with its sides bisected.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are designated by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to an improvement in tire-heaters and it consists in combining, with a case or cylinder which has removable sides and adjusting standards or pedestals, a heater, composed, preferably, of a circular pipe or tube, punctured or supplied with burners and means for supplying it with the heating medium, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.
To enable others to make and use my iuvention, I will proceed to describe it.
This device is particularly adapted to'heating or expanding tires of locomotive-wheels, either when the latter are under the locomotive, or removed from thereunder and still remaining on their axles or removed from their axles.
To accomplish the heating of the wheel-tire when the wheels are on their axles, or occupying an uprightposition, acase, A, is provided, which holds the heating pipe or tubeB and receives the wheel, and which is supported upon standards or pedestals G C. To allow the wheel to be introduced into the case A its sides A, A are made adjustable or removable, through the diagonal slots to a and headed projections a a and to permit of the sides A A being replaced, to avoid interference with the axle, they are bisected, and so constructed as to leave an opening for the passage ofthe axle, as seen in the drawing. Binding-screws a a are adjusted to blocksa a disposed in the case A, so as to clamp the case-sides in place at their points :of bisection, as seen in Fig. 2. The standards U C are supplied with screw-threads at, and a suitable distance from, their upper ends, where they pass through perforated plates or projections c a fastened to opposite sides of the case A. The object of this construction is to enable the standards to be adjusted vertically, by which the case may beraised and lowered so as to allow it to be properly fitted to the wheel or regulated in its height to correspond with that of the wheel to which it is to be adjusted when the latter is allowed to remain upon its axle. To keep the standards in an upright and steady position while the heating apparatus is thus being used broad and flat feet or pedestals are supplied thereto. A pipe, D, having a stop-cock, d, leads from a suitably-disposed gasoline or gasometer, and unites, as shown in Fig. 1, with the heater-pipe B, which is punctured or supplied with burners, to permit of the escape of the gas, which, when ignited, performs the heating of the tire exposed to its action, the case having been previously adjusted to the wheel.
The heater tube or pipe B is less than a circle, so as to adapt it to wheels of various sizes.
To prevent the warping of the case from the effects of the heat, it may be lined with fireclay, or other suitable non-heat-conducting material.
The manner of using my heater when the wheel is removed from its axle, is deemed too obvious for illustration.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A tire heating apparatus, composed, respectively, of the case A, having the removable sides A A and adjusting standards 0 0, and the heating and supply pipes B D, substantially as described and shown.
In testimony whereofI have hereunto signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FREDK. STRATTNER.
