GEORGE IV, SLATER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
HEAT Ne OR \IULCANIZING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 606,364, dated June 28, 1898.
Application filed March 10, 1898.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. SLATER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Heating or Vulcanizing Apparatus, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of an improved construction of heating or vulcanizin g apparatus which is especially applicable for vulcanizing pneumatic tires or mending otherrubber substances, the apparatus being cheaply manufactured and the various parts thereof readily assembled. V
It further consists of novel details of construction, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims. 4
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a heating or vulcanizing apparatus embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a section on line a: 00, Fig. 1. Fig.- 3 represents a perspective view of the lower part of the yoke or bail employed. I
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a heating or vulcanizing apparatus consisting of a lower member, burner, or base B, which may be provided with feet and has a chamber 0 within the same for the reception of the material D, which may be asbestos, mineral wool, or other material, which latter is adapted to be saturated with the heating medium, which may be alcohol or other ignitible fluid.
E designates a plug in engagement with the bottomof the base D for the purpose of rendering the chamber 0 accessible or for the purpose of enabling gas to be used as the heating medium.
F designates a cap adapted to be screwed or otherwise secured to the wick-tube F, said cap serving as a closure for the opening G when the apparatus is not in use.
H designates a flue or chimney forming the combustion-chamber,which is supported upon the base 13 and is provided with the recesses J for the admission of oxygen and to provide the necessary draft passages for the support Serial No. 673,860. i (No model.)
M, the latter consisting of the yoke Q, which has at its lower portion the lips R, which en gage the lugs S, which latter are in the present instanceoppositely located near the top of the combustion-chamber II. The upper portion of the yoke Q has the thumb-screw T passing therethrough, the extremity of which is adapted to engage the member N, by means of which latter and the bed K the pneumatic tire or other article N of rubber or similar material can be rigidly held while being vul Canized, as will be hereinafter explained.
The top corners of the flue H are beveled or cut away in downward direction, so that the recesses or passages D exist between the chimney and the bed K, and providing, with the recesses J ,for a draft through said fine I and permitting the escape of the products of combustion therefrom, while, however, causing said products to impinge the under side of said bed.
- It will be noticed that while the lugs M pre vent shifting or displacement of the bed K they serve to retard the escape of the products of combustion from the fine and so retain them sufficiently long against the bed as to highly heat the latter, after which they enter the uncovered corners of the flue's and so escape.
The operation is as follows: The tire is placed in position (seen in Fig. 1) with the puncture against the bed K, and the member N is then screwed against the tire to the desired extent. The cap F having been removed and the burner ignited, itwill be seen that the heat will be applied to the under side of the bed K, and after the tire has been vulcanized .to the desired extent the same can be readily removed by loosening the screw P, as is evident. I
If desired, I may employ gas as the heat ing medium by removing the plug E and the material D and also the cap F, as is evident.
The upper faces of thelips R and under faces of the lugs S are curved, respectively, in reverse direction, so as to interlock, and thus prevent the shifting or displacement of the yoke or bail Qfrom the chamber or flue H.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a heating or vulcanizing apparatus, the combination of a base, a flue or combustion-chamber supported thereupon,a bed supported upon said combustion-chamber and a clamping device, the latter consisting of a yoke having lips for engagement with lugs on said-combustion-chamber, a member located above said bed, and a thumb-screw passing through said yoke and en gaging said member.
2. A hollow base, a flue supported thereon, a bed mounted on said flue, a follower above the same, a screw carrying said follower and a yoke in which said screw is fitted, said flue having on its sides outwardlyturned lugs and said yoke having on its under ends inwardly-turned lips, which latter are removably engaged with said lugs.
3. Ahollow base, a flue supported thereon, a bed mounted on said flue, afollower above the same, a screw carrying said follower and a yokein whichsaid screw is fitted, said flue "having on its sides outwardly-turned lugs and said yoke having on its under ends inwardly-turned lips, which latter are removably engaged with said lugs, said bed having downwardly-projectin g lugs which enter said 9 flue.
4. In a heating and vulcanizin g apparatus, a heater, a flue, a removable bed closing the top of said flue, a follower above said bed and a device for clamping said bed and follower to said flue, saidbed having lugs which enter said flue, and the corners of the latter being cut away, forming discharge-openings,whereby the products of combustion directed -against said bed are retarded by said lugs and discharged through said corner-openings.
5. I11 a'device of the character stated, a flue Zwith outwardly-projecting lugs on the sides' thereof, a bed supported on said flue, a follips and lugs being reversely curved.
