UNITED .STATES,
PATENT OFFICE.
STEPHEN, 1r. HIPKINS, or AUBURN, WASHINGTON.
SANITARY COW-TAIL HOLDER.
To all whom it may 00mm.-
Be it known that I, STEPHEN H. HrrKrNs,
a citizen of the United States, residing at.
Auburn, in the county of King and State of l/Vashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sanitary Cow- Tail Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and" exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to'whi'eh it appertains to make and use the same.
y invention relates to improvements in devices for holding the tail of a cow against switching during the milking operation. I
The primary object of my invention is to provide a novel form of clip for clipping the 7 end of a cows tail so that it may be held against switching, said clip being constructed so as to not injure the tail and in such manner that accidental derangement thereof is prevented.
Another and more specific object is to provide a clip of the character described that is connected with a suitable weight member and will serve in a reliable manner to hold the tails of cows in the desired position dur ing a milking operation, the clip being constructed of spring metal and so arranged that it may be readily grasped to effect clasping or unclasping of a cow tail.
The above and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification and then more particularly pointed out in the claims.
lVith reference to the drawings, wherein I have illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention as it is reduced to practice, and throughout the several views of which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved clip in use,
Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation improved cow tail holder,
Fig. 3'is an enlarged top plan view of the n,
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary side elevation of the jaws'of the clip,
of my Fig. 5 is a fragmentary longitudinal secof reference, the numeral 1 designates as an entirety a sprlng gripping member or .member 3 which is Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug.- 30, 1921. Application filed'February 7, 1919. Serial no; 275,579. i
clip that is to be secured' to the tail of a cow,
suitable flexible element member 1 and a weight suitably connected with the flexible element 2.
to a chain or other connected with the The securing or gripping member 1 comprises an approximately U-sh-aped spring metal body portion 4 that serves as a handle and has its intermediate portion bent into approximately circular formas at 5. he side arm portions 6 of the body 4 are bent back upon themselves at their free ends to provide bearings 7.
I provide in. connection with the handle or body portion 4 gripping jaws 8 and 9 which are provided with divergent shank portions 10 and 11 respectively. The shanks l0 and 11 are reduced at their free ends to provide apertured eyes 12 and inserted through said eyes and the bearings 7 on the side arms 6 are pivoted pins 13. The shanks l0 and 11 are pivoted to one another as at 14 while the jaws 8 and 9 are disposed normally parallel to one another. The side arms 6 are normally extended outwardly from the portion 5 of the body in divergent planes and serve to hold the shanks l0 and 11 spaced apart sufliciently to hold the jaws 8 and 9 closed. Upon the grasping of the handle portion 4 and forcing of the arms 6 toward one another a corresponding movement is given the shanks l0 and 11 and the jaws 8 and 9 are opened.
The jaw 9 is rectangular and -formed integral with the shank l1. Formed on the inner face of the jaw 9 are corrugations or teeth 15 which prevent slipping of the tail of the cow from between thejaws. The jaw 8 is rectangular and provided with a rectangular elongated opening 16 therein which opening receives the jaw 9.
In use when it is desired to secure the tail of a cow, the arms 6 of the body portion 4 are pressed inwardly and thejaws 8 and 9 open. The tail is placed between the jaws and upon release of the arms 6 the jaws will move into gripping engagement with the tail and securely hold it against slipping. The teeth or corrugations 15 in combination with the skeleton jaw 8 securely hold the tail as will be clearly seen. By means of the weight 8 and flexible element 2 connecting it with the clip 1 the tail of the cow may be held in the desired position so that the switching of foreign matter therefrom into a bucket of milk is prevented.
With my improved tail holder will be seen that a completely sanitary mllkmg operation may be had.
In practice, I have found that the form of my invention, illustrated in the drawings and referred to in the above description, as the preferred embodiment, is the most efficient and practical; yet realizing that the conditions concurrent with the adoption of my device will necessarily vary, I desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes in the details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, when required, without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention, as set forth.
hat is claimed is A cow tail holder comprising pivoted handles, integral jaws on the pivoted ends of the member including diverging arms having bearings at their ends to recelve sald pins,
and a substantially circular tension portion connecting said arms.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
