DAVID IV. NOYES, OF BENNINGTON, VERMONT.
IMPROVEMENT IN WlNDOW-SASHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,921, dated May 13, 1873; application filed April 12, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID W. Noxns, of Bennington, in the county of. Bennington and State of Vermont, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Ventilating, Dust-Excluding House and Car Window; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
The Figures 1, 2, and 4 show modifications of my invention. The Figs. 3, 5, and 6 are details of the same.
My invention has relation to windows constructed with'a view to the exclusion of dust and the ventilation of apartments; and consists in the novel construction and arrangement of the parts hereinafter described and claimed, which are designed to be effective for the purposes named.
A of the drawing represents the frame of a window, and B a window proper, hinged and operated therein, as hereinafter described. I sometimes form my windows of a series of frames, A, and windows B, so that the former may represent the stiles and the latter a single pane of the sash., In this window B I arrange a glass, as shown at 0, around the rim of which I affix a strip of rubber for packing, as shown at a on Fig. 2. This glass sits in a groove or channel inside the frame A, and is held in position bythe rubber strip last mentioned and the hinged door next described. D represents a swinging door adapted to lit inside the frame, as shown on Fig. 4. One pintle of its hinges is shorter than the other for convenience of adjustment or removal. It
' is attached to the frame by means of its pintles and arms, as shown at c, which pintles fit in the eyes of the screw-heads f. They are secured in place by means of the flanged head of the screw f, in the manner shown on Fig. 6. These doors D serve as a substitute for putty to hold the glass or other lighttransmitting material in its proper position inside the frame. The screws f and f are arranged in suitable nuts attached to the frame, and serve to hold the door D in the position desired and to press it down upon the glass at will. In place of the glass O I substitute a frame of wire-cloth, as shown at d in cross-section, to serve as a fly or mosquito net. I also substitute for said glass a double or folded wire frame, as shown at h on Fig. 5, and partially illustrated on Fig. 1, between which folds or'frames I place cotton batting or wool of any color desired. This arrangement serves not only to exclude dust, but also to give such a hue of color to the apartment as is deemed most desirable. A hue of green or black is considered preferable, but white is found most convenient when light for reading is required. The letter H represents a frame having openings in its sides, and. is fully described in my patent of March 11, 1873. This frame is designed to be used interchangeably with the windows, glass, &c., and the door D hereinbefore described. I lay no claim to the invention thereof in this application.
A mirror or glass pane may be inserted in this last-mentioned frame, at will, for the convenience of the inmates of the apartment.
My device is applicable to dwellings, churches, and structures generally from which it is desirable to exclude dust and promote ventilation, and it is peculiarly well adapted to railway cars.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the frame A, door D, and screws f f with the interchangeable glass 0 and wire frames d and h, substantially as specified.
2. The screw f, having flanged head, as described, in combination with the frame A and door D, constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
Witnesses: DAVID W. NOYES.
JAMES B. MEAGHAM, H. M. HARRIS.
