vThis invention re'latestozfioor polishers or 1 cleaners fand particularly `to theV type; whichembody a movable frame adapted to be pushed about the floor and' carrying,k a motor for operating-*the mechanism of the device.v 4- Y' Y One of the objects of the invention'is to produce .a machine having improved means for effecting the adjustment and drivingof the polishing,drumsnor brushes. Among the other objects of the invention'is to provide means yfor driving-thedrums so as toV facilitate the movinOr of the machine across the floor and to facilitate thezremovalof any dust ordirt by pneumatic .means which may be used in conjunction with or independently of' the polishing drums.y

The machine preferably comprises a portable frame l1, mounted on wheels 2 preferably having rubber tires 3 that prevent their marring the surface of the floor. The machine may be ypushed about the Hoor by any suitable means, such as a handle 4. The polishing or cleaning is preferably effected through the medium of two drums 5 preferably supported adjustably. For this purlposethese drums are preferably supportedV onadjustable supporting frames, each f rame consisting of a pair of

6, 6 between which each drum is carried rotatably. The

drums may be the formgof cylinders with f polishing surfaces, orgclothing7 7 (see Fig. 8.)', or they may berin the formof brushes `(see Fig. 9) with bristles 8. InA order to en# able the different kinds of drums 'to be interchanged the shafts 9 are made removable and may be held yinplaceby set screws 10.

The pawl may be held released (see'Fig. 5) to l'et thedrums down on theioor. The arms of both drums are connected in` any suitable manner to effect their simultaneous movement, prefers ably lthrough segments l5 which form tails or rear extensions on a pair of the drums.

Forthis purpose a driving chain 2O is provided which passes under one sprocket sleeve fonenample, sleeve-18, and overthc other sleeve 19, being guided in this way Sby a guide sprocket 21. y'Each sleeve 18y or v19 drives .its corresponding drum through a sprocket chain 22. Evidently the chain 2O affords means for driving the drums 5 in any position the arms 6 may assume.

In order to regulate the degree of slack ness of the chain 2O I prefer to support the guide sprocket 21 on an adjustable bracket 25. The chain 2O ispreferably driven by an electric motor 26, the driving pinion 27 Vof which drives the chain through a gear 28 carrying a driving sprocket 29 rigid with the gear 28. The motor 26 is preferably mount- Vrenovator of any ed on the middle of the frame l and is supplied with current through an electric cable 30 supported on the handle 4 and which'may be provided at its other end with a plug to tit in any standard electric light socket.

In order to clean. up the floor I prefer to provide pneumatic means which may include a suction fan 31. having an intakeor suction head 32 between the drums 5 and having a discharge uptake 33 terminating in a goose neck 34Jsupporting a bonnet 35 beneath ywhich a receptacle, such as a bag 36, may be attached. f Y l Y The fan may be driven at a high speed from the motor by a belt 37 passing over a pulley 38 on the fan shaft. y y The fan may be driven at the same time as Vthe drums where the work is light and not consuming great power at the drums, but if desired the machine may be used solely as apneumatic cleaner by locking the drums 5up above the Hoor and also preferably disconnecting vthe drive from thel motor to the chain 20. :F or thus purpose the gear 28 and sprocket129 are preferably mounted on a swinging plate `39 l(Fig. .6) supported on a pin 40 on a fixed bracket 4l. By looseningthe bolt 42 inthe arcuate slot 43 the gear 28 can bei-swung to its disengaged poston.' 3 V i u ,'Ihezdrums 5 (Fig. 8) maybe of any construction desiredGfor cutting, abrading or polishing the floor. For abrading' the floor the clothing'i` on the drum preferably comprises a pad 7a of felt and ay covering 'i'b of sandpaper or similar material. These clothing sheets may be conveniently attached to the drums by jamming the ends or edges of these sheets into a longitudinal slot 7 inthe Awall of the drum. And if desired a well known form or suction head `(not illustrated) for cleaning walls and furniture may `be attached to a.hose'44 (see Fig. 4). But normally the elbowconnection45 would beplugged.

`I claim:

l. .In a ioor polishing machine, the com- `bination of 'a frame mounted on wheels, a

bination of Va frame mounted on wheels, a

pair of arms projecting on opposite sides of said frame, a-rotatable drum carried between eacih pair of arms, intermeshingmeans connecting the pairs of arms so thatp'they move up or downwin unison, means for raising Vsaid arms to withdraw said drums from thefloor, meansffor yieldingly pressing said arms to force the drums toward thefloor, a motorfon said vframe, and means for driv-` ing said drums from said motor.

3. In a floor polishing machine, the combination of a frame mounted on wheels, a pair of armsl pivotallysupportedon opposite sides `of said frame, a drum-.rotatably mounted between each pairV of arms, segments connecting said pairsof arms to ef'ect simultaneous up, or down movementof said pairs ofarms7 a ratchet Vand pawl, a chain connected therewith and connected with said arms to raise thegsame,l a spring tending to depress said arms toepress said'drums tof ward the floor, Va' motor on said frame and meansV for driving said drums from said motor. v

4. In aA floor polishing or cleaning machine, the combination of a frame mounted on wheels, a pair of polishing drums rotataf bly supported in said frame, a motor on said frame for driving said. drums, ablower. alsoV driven by said motor having a suction'intake between said drums, and means for disconnecting vat will the driving connection from said motor to said polishing` drums to `permit thefan and suction intake` to Abe operated` independently of said drums.
