Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug. 30, 1921.
Application filed March 13, 1920. Serial No. 365,524.
T0 01 whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR C-ELLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, State of New York, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Combined Scraper and Chopper, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combined scraper and chopper which may be used for scraping garage floors, or other places where grease, oil, d1rt, paint, ice, or other materlal is apt to cake or harden.
The object of the invention is to provide a combined scraper and chopper which is simple in structure, eflicient for the purpose for which it is intended, and economical of manufacture.
Further objects of the invention will appear more fully hereinafter.
The invention consists substantially in the combination, construction, location and relative arrangement of parts, all as will be more fully hereinafter set forth, as shown by the accompanying drawings, and finally set forth in the appended claim.
Referring to the draWing,-
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the head portion of a combined scraper and chopper embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2, 2, Fig. 1, and looking in the direction of the arrows.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3, 3, Fig. 2, and looking in the direction of the arrows, and showing the blade reversed.
The same part is desi ated by the same reference I character w IGIGVBI it occurs throughout the several views.
In accordance with my invention I provide a heavy head portion 1, preferably a casting of relatively large size to afford a considerable weight, and in the formation thereof I provide means for enabling a handle 2 of any suitable material or length to be secured thereto. While I do not desire to be limited to the size, shape or material of the head 1 or of the handle 2, or to the manner in which the same are secured together, I find that a cast iron head of the shape illustrated is satisfactory, and in the casting thereof I provide a cored portion 3 at the top thereof in which is forced the end of a round wooden handle 2.
The lower end of the head 1 is rovided with a slot 4 extending throughout t e width of the head, to thereby form sides 5 and 6, through which extend bolt holes in alinement with each other. I provide a blade 7 of suitablematerial, such as steel, of the width of the slot 4 in the bottom of the head 1, the respective edges of which are formed into a beveled scraping edge 8 and a plurality of beveled chopping edges 9. A plurality of holes 10 are provided in the blade 7 so that irrespective of which edge of the blade 7 is in operative position, a set of holes 10 thereof will be in alinement with the bolt holes in the sides 5 and 6 of the head 1. Bolts 11 are provided to extend through the head 1 and the blade 7, which bolts are provided with nuts 12, preferably of the butterfly type to facilitate the quick attachment and detachment thereof for the purpose of substituting a new blade or .for the purpose of reversing the effective edge of the blade.
It will be seen from the foregoing that I have provided a simple and exceedingly efficient device of the nature referred to, which has weight, thereby making its use more efficient and less laborious. It will also be apparent that due to the feature of the removable and reversible blade, the cost of upkeep is greatly reduced as the blades can be furnished separately at but slight cost as compared to a complete new device.
1 Many modifications and changes in detail will readily occur to those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention as defined in the claim.
Therefore, having now set forth the objects and nature of my invention, and having shown and described a structure embodying the principles thereof, what I claim as new and useful and of my own invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,-
In a combined scraping and chopping tool, a heavy flat-headed member provided with a socket at one end for securing a handle thereto in alinement with the horizontal axis of said member, said member having shoulders formed at the juncture of the socket and head thereof, extension lips forming a blade receiving groove at theuother end of said head, a double edged blade one edge being of the continual edge type to form a scraper and the other edge being notched or of the interrupted edge type to form a chopper either of said edges being formed to fit between said lips in alinement with said member and handle, means for clamping said blade between said lips said means comprising cooperating bolt holes provided in said lips and said blade edges, and removable bolts in said cooperating bolt holes whereby either edge of the blade may be se cured to said lips. 10
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand on this 25 day of February, A. D.
ARTHUR CELLER.
