DAVIT AND CRANE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug. 23, 1921- Application filed'Aug'ust 11, 1919; Serial No. 316,775.
To all whom it mag] concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY W. BROADY, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of Bayside, borough of Queens, count'y'of Queens, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Davits and Cranes, ofwhich the following is a specification. 2
This invention relates to improvements in davitsj Under certain conditions it is desirable that the arms or booms of davits and cranes may without disassembly and separation of feet above the deck," 7 :1 In mechanically operated tive position. 35
therefore, to produce a davit in. which the parts be lowered or swung down close to the deck of the vessel when not in use, and on battleships andother war vessels, it is required. by the regulations that all arms or booms of davits .or cranesshall be capable of being turned or swung down so that its highest point will not extend more than six davits, and particularly screw-actuated davits of the quadrant type, the extreme inboard position is substantially perpendicular and the boom or davit arm extends veryimuch above the limit allowed. It has, therefore, been a problem to produce a davit of such mechani- ;cally operated or quadrant type, the boom of which "could without disassembly" be turned or swung downxbelow the required :limit and which at all times might be readily and quickly moved or hoisted into opera- The' primary object ofrmy invention is,
arm or'boom may, without disassembly or separationofthe parts, he swung down beyond the extreme inboard position to which it is normallyv moved by the davit operating 'mechanism, and particularly the production nism but which can be released therefrom r and moved in relation thereto.
Another object of my invention is the provision in combinationwith. such a davit of a means whereby the-boom or arm of the ,Vdavit mayizbe'quickly andlreadily swung -more completely outlined in the following specification and in said drawings.
Toenable others skilled in the art so fully to comprehend the underlying features of my invention that they may embody the same by-numerous modifications in structure'and relationship of parts contemplated bypthis invention, drawings depicting a preferred form have been annexed as a part of this disclosure, and insuch drawings like characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout all the views, ofwhichz- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a davit embodying my invention, showing in full lines the davit armin its'normally operative inboard position and showing in dotted lines theoutboard position of such arm;
Fig. 2 is a simila'relevation ofthe davit arm swung or folded downin relation to, its operating mechanism into a position, in which the arm will be substantiallyi horizontal; V
i Fig. 3 is an inboard end view of the davit shown in Figs. 1 and 2; and f FFig.4: is a section on the line l- 1 of 1g. 1.
7 Referring now to these drawings, 1 indicates a davit arm which, as shown, is of the quadrant type having a lower end quadrantshaped in conformation and provided with a toothed segment 2 which rolls upon a rectilinear toothed ra'ck 3 preferably cast integrally with a frame 4:. The arm 1 also swings in a vertical plane about a pivot 5 located between the ends thereof and the pivot 5 is guided at the top of said frame 4 and caused to move in' a rectilineariand substantially horizontal path for the purpose of swinging the davit outboard-and inboard from onenormal extreme position to the other. fAll this is old and forms no tion. g 1 7 As illustrated, the davit arm is so pivoted to swing in a Vertical plane on a'movable part of imy invenblock 6 which slides on a rod 7 mounted at the top of said frame and said block 6 also has a threaded connection with a screw 8 rotatably mounted in said frame belowand parallel to said rod. The screw is rotated by a crank 9 cooperating with gears 10, 11,
12 and 13 respectively. y
In accordance with the preferred form of my invention illustrated, the davit arm is releasably connected to the traveling pivot 5 and said arm is adapted to be moved rela tively to said pivot without complete disconnection therefrom in order to permit further lowering of the davit toward the deck of the vessel. As illustrated, the pivot pin'5 is arranged to bear at one end in an exten sion 14 of the'block 6 and is, as shown, provided at its opposite end with a roller 15 and in the embodiment shown, said pivot extends through an arc-shaped slot 15 formed in the davit arm and extending from the normal pivotal pointof the davit rearwardly toward the lower end or heel thereof. Said pivot pin 5 is so releasably connected at the upepr end of said slot withthe davit arm preferably by means of a plunger'or reciprocating block 16 movable by means of a screw spindle 18 in suitable ways in a housing 17- preferably formed integralwith the davit arm. As shown, the pivot pin is provided with a transverse slot or opening 19 and the plunger 16 is moved downwardly therethrough and itsYlower-end seats in a depression 20 in the opposite sideoof the slot 15 so as to procure a firm connection between said pivot pin 5 and the davit arm 1.
When the davit arm 1 is so connected with the pivot pin 5 and block 6, it will be apparent that the rotation of the operating screw by means of the crank handle 9 will cause the davit arm 1 to be swung in avertical plane from the inboard position shown in full lines in Fig. 1 to the outboard position shown in dotted lines in said figure.
It will also be apparent that when the plunger 16 is withdrawn from the opening in said pivot 5, the davit arm may because of the mounting of said pivot in the slot 15 be moved in relation to said pivot from one end of the slot to the other, and that during such swinging the first tooth 23 of the segpreferably rounded for this purpose andfits in a suitable depression 23. The arm may be thus folded down into a position in-which the outer endof the arm will berelatively close to the deck of the vessel, and it will also be seen that the parts are not separated but are retained in position readyfor -quick readjustment into operative position.
In order to permit ready readjustment after a foldlng of the davit as hereinabove described, I preferably attach to the outer end of the davit a block and falls andconnect the opposite end of such block and falls to theoutboard end of the. frame 4 preferably by a hook 21 secured in an 22 formedin said frame." By 'such an arrangement, it will be. possible to swing the davit about said first tooth 23 and the davit may be swung into its normal inboard position as shown in Fig. 1, whereupon the plunger 16 a 'may' be operated by its screw '18 to again connect the parts together.
In a construction of this type, the davit arm: may be swung from its inboard, opera-s tive position to its folded down position withgreat rapidity and may furthermore be raised from such folded-down position to its operative'position also with much greater rapidity than would be possibleif the parts were separated or disassembled.
Without further analysis, the foregoing will so fully reveal the gist of this invention that'others can by applying current knowledge readily adapt it for various-applications without-omitting certain features that, from the standpoint of the prior art, might fairly constitute essential character- ..istics of the generic or specific aspects of the invention, and therefore such adaptations should and a're'intended'to be comprehended within the meaning and range of equivalency of the following claims.
Having described my invention, I claim: :1. In a crane or davit, the combination with a suitably supported and pivoted davit arm and operating mechanism engaging said arm intermediate its ends for swinging the same to its normalextremepositions re spectively, of means for connecting said arm and said operating mechanism to permit relative movement therebetween to permit swinging of the arm beyond one of suchnormal extreme positions.
2. In a crane or davit, the combination with an. arm supportedto swing vertically in a suitable frame and operating mechanism supported in said frame and engaging said arm between its ends for swinging the same to its extremeoperative positions re -spect1vely-,'and a releasable connection between said arm and said operating mechan sm to permit relative movement therebe tween to swing'the'arm beyond'one of its normal extreme positions. ment Wlll act as a pivot, and such tooth "1s 3. In a crane or davit, the combination with an arm supported in a suitable frame to swing in a vertical plane about a point between its ends and having a slot extending from its pivotal pointtoward its foot,
:releasablysecuring said pivot in said slot.
4. Ina crane ordavit, the combination with an arm supported in a suitable frame to swing in a vertical plane about a point between its ends andhaving a slot extending from its pivotal oint toward its foot,
a pivot pin about whlch said arm is adapt-' 5 ed to swing mounted in said slot; operating mechanism engaging said pivot for normally swinging the arm to extreme operative positions respectively, a plunger hous ing formed contiguous to one end of said 10 slot and a screw actuated plunger mounted in said housing for connecting said pivot to the said arm.
In witness whereof, I have signed my name to the foregoing specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
,HARRY W. BROADY.
