UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. I
CLARENCE IR. McMICHAEL AND BENJAMIN w. WALL, or PATMOS, ARKANSAS.
RAILWAY RAIL BRACE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 23, 1921.
Application filed. November 9, 1920. Serial No. 422,831.
To all whomit may concern Be it known that we, CLARENCE R. Mo- MIoiLinL and BENJAMIN WHITE WALL, c1t1- Zens of the United States, residing at Pat mos, in the county of Hempstead and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Railway-Rail.
one of its objects to simplify and improve the construction and increase the efliclency and utility of devices of this character.
Vvith these and other objects in view, the
invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in' the claims, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the improved device applied.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly in section.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view enlarged of one of the base members.
The improved device comprises base or supporting members 10 each formed with a depression 11 to receive the flange portion of the rails 12 and with an upwardly directed brace portion 13 bearing over the outer part of the rail flange as shown at 14:, and with its upper part directed inwardly as shown at 15 and bearing against the web and beneath the head of the rail.
By this means brace portions firmly sup port the rails and effectually prevent them from being overturned under lateral thrust or strain.
The port-ions of the base members 10 which extend beneath the rail flanges are widened, as shown, to increase the bearing surfaces, and correspondingly increase the rigidity and stability of the device.
The base members 10 extend toward each other with their confronting ends in spaced relation, as shown, and bearing thereon is a continuous coupling or clamping bar 16 extended at its ends over the confronting portions of the rail flanges, as shown at 17.
The bar 16 is secured to the base members 10 by a plurality of bolts 18 or other suitable devices.
The improved device is simple. in construction, will be made entirely of metal, preferably steel, and may be made as heavy and.
strong as required.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed in the drawings and set forth In the specification, but it will be understood that any modifications within the scope of the claimed invention may be made in the construction without departing from.
the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
e claim v 1. A railway rail brace comprising an upper continuous member of uniform width throughout with the lower faces at the ends beveled to bear over the confronting portions of the rail flanges, coacting lower members bearing beneath the upper member and extending beneath the rails, each of said lower members having a depressed seat to respectively receive the rail flanges and hold ing the rails from inward movement, clamping means uniting the upper and lower members, and an integralbrace portion extending upwardly from each of the lower members at their outer ends, each of said brace portions having a recess to receive the adj acent edge of the rail flange and an obliquely directed extension bearing beneath the rail heat at its juncture with the rail web.
2. A railway rail brace comprising an upper continuous member of uniform width throughout with the lower faces at the ends beveled to bear over the confronting portions of the rail flanges, coacting lower members bearing beneath the upper member in creased in width at their outer ends and extending by the widened portions beneath the rails, each of said lower members having a depressed seat in the widened portions to respectively receive the rail flanges and holding the rails from inward movement, clamping means uniting the upper and lower'members, and an integral brace portion extendingupwardly from each of the lower members at their outer widened ends, each of said brace portions having a recess to receive the adjacent edge of the rail flange, and an obliquely directed extension corresponding in width to the widened portion of the lower member and bearing beneath the rail head at its juncture with the rail web.
In testimony whereof, we 'aflix our signatures hereto- CLARENCE R. MCMIGHAEL. BENJAMIN W. WALL.
