WATER-HEATER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 23, 1921..
Application filed November 8, 1919. Serial No. 336,640.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, \VILLIE utsi-IT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Thomasville in the county of Thomas and State of Georgia. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ater-Heaters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in water heaters and the principal object of the invention is to provide a heater adapted to be attached to an ordinary range.
Another object of the invention is to provide a water heater having a portion thereof adapted to surround the stove pipe in order to utilize the heat radiated therefrom.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device having a heating coil located within the fire box of the stove and positioned within the stove pipe to facilitate the circulation of water within the heater.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following s recification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front view in elevation of a stove constructed in accordance with this invention showing a portion of the heater broken away to more clearly illustrate the details of construction.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional View on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view on line 4l4 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view on line 5-5 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 6 is a horizontal sectional view on line 66 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 designates a range or stove of the ordinary construction having the usual stove pipe 2 leading therefrom. The water heater is designated generally by the numeral 3 and comprises the back wall 4 which extends upwardly from the rear edge of the top of the stove and is formed with the end walls 5 which project along the side edges of the stove for a short distance in order to support the device.
The back wall 4 of the heater is provided with a vertically extending central curved wall 6 which projects from the top 7 oi the heater to a point in a plane with the lower edge of the back 1. The wall 6 conforms to the curvature of the stove pipe as clearly illustrated in the drawings and is connected at its lower end with the stove pipe by the bottom wall 8. A front wall 9 connects the side walls 5 adjacent the top 7 and said front wall is joined to the top to prevent the escape of liquid at this point. The front wall 9 extends downwardly from the top for a short distance and has connected to its lower edge the inwardly extending wall. 10 which connects with the back as will clearly be seen upon reference to Fig. This wall 10 is formed centrally of its rear edge with the recess 11 which is curved to conform to the shape of the stove pipe and connects with the inner faces of the ends of the walls 5, as illustrated in Fig.
Extending downwardly from the wall 10 for a short distance and following the curve of the recess 11 is the wall 12 which is joined to the wall 10 and the ends of this wall 12 join the back wall adjacent the point where the wall 6 joins the back wall to form a drum as illustrated in Fig. 5. A bottom wall 13 joins the lower edge of the wall 12 and is arcuate in form so that its ends extend to the rear wall and the inner edge joins the stove pipe. It will thus be seen that a heating drum is formed immediately beneath the heating chamber formed by the walls 4:, 5, 7, 9 and 10. A shelf 1 1 is positioned beneath the bottom wall 10 of the chamber for a short distance and slightly above the lower edge of the heating drum as clearly illustrated in Figs. 1 and a.
In order to establish a complete circulation through the device the vertical pipe 15 is provided and extends through the stove pipe 2. The upper end of this pipe is bent as at 16 and projects into the top of the heating chamber as illustrated in Fig. 4: while the lower end of said pipe is bent angularly as at 17 and projects into the fire box of the stove. The end of the bent portion 17 is provided with a cap 18 and a branch 19 leads rearwardlv from the pipe 15 near its lower terminal and communicates with the interior of the lower end of the rear portion of the heater. A. suitable faucet 20 is threaded into the wall 6 near its lower terminal to provide a means for drawing the water from the heater while a filling spout 21 is positioned in the top wall 7 as will be clearly seen upon reference to Fig. 2.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that in use the device is filled with Water and the hot gases passing from the stove and through the stove pipe 2 will contact with the walls of the pipe and with the pipe 15 so that the Water contained within the heater will absorb the heat. It will be seen that as the water becomes hot a circulation will be established through the pipe 15 and when it is desired to draw water from the device the faucet 20 is operated. It will also be seen that when the supply has become low or exhausted, the heater may be refilled through the opening 21 and a particularly simple and eflicient water heater is provided for attachment to the ordinary type of stove Without in any way necessitating a change in the construction.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that such changes may be made in the combination and arrangement of parts as will fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is A water heater for stoves comprising a chamber having a smoke pipe projecting upwardly therethrough, the rear wall of said chamber being bent backwardly to form a curved water circulating space about said smoke pipe, said chamber having an overhanging part at the upper front portion thereof, and a water circulating tube opening into the overhanging part and passing downwardly through said pipe and into the fire box of the stove and also opening into the lower part of the curved space beforementioned.
In testimony whereof I aflix in presence of two witnesses.
