This esca'pement mechanism comprises the usual spring devices disposed within a housing 21, which is secured in any preferred manner to the top plate 22of the frame, and

secured thereto, and an escapement wheel 28.

andloosely mounted uponthe shaft 26 and connected thereto by means ofa pawl 29 pivoted upon the wheelat 30 and held in contact with a ratchet wheel '31 secured to the shaft-by means of a spring 32, as shown The dogmechanism cooperating with the ratchetwheel is carried by a yoke member I 35, which is pivotally mounted to rock upon the housing 21 in an'y desired manner, for instance by means ofthe' depending lugs 36, I froin the" housing carrying the pivot screws 37, which enter pivoting ears 38, formed from the yoke 35, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5. The yoke 35 is rocked upon these pivots through the universal bail by means of uprights 39 carrying lateral pins 40 which seat in the open ends 20 of the rearward arms from the bail.
The yoke 35 supports the dogs cooperating with the ratchet wheel, and for this purpose is provided with a lateral frame ll having a lug 42 at its free end, to which the fined dog 43 is secured. This frame is also provided with a stop member 44: bent therefrom to limit the movement of the movable dog 45, which is pivoted upon the yoke by a stud screw/lG, and normally drawn toward said stop M by a tension spring d? extending from the dog to a lug t8 upon the yoke. The movable dog 45 is mounted for both an oscillatory movement toward and from the fixed dog and'also a longitudinal movement upon its pivot radially toward and from the teeth a of the escapement wheel. This may be accomplished in any desired manner, for instance by meansof the slot 49 in the 1110?. able dog 45. The yoke, when rocked in one direction by the universal bar is restored to normal position by means of a tension spring 50 secured at one end to the houslng 21, and

The yoke is also adapted to be operated independently ofthe universal bail through the space bar mechanism in order that the .escapement may be actuated without operation of the bail and the parts controlled thereby, which results in-a material saving in the wearupon the several parts and in the touch action from the space bar. For this purpose the yoke is provided with a depending finger 52 having its free end deflected at an angle thereto 'and adapted to be engagedupon its rear face by a rocker arm 54;, extending from a rock-shaft which is pivoted at its opposite ends 56 in the frame 10 of the machine. This rock shaft carries the usual forwardly extending arms 57, which are connected at the key board of the machine by the space bar 58, as shown in Fig. 1. For the purpose of restoring the space barto its elevated position after depression to actuate the escapement, an arm 59 is provided thereon from which a tension spring'60 extends and is secured at 61 to' the machine frame. It will be seen that a depression of the space bar rocks the escapement yoke, so that the actuating pins 40 thereon move away from their seats in the universal bail, whicheffects an operation of the escapement dogs entirely independent of the action from said bail. When it is desired to release the escapement for tabulating or other purposes, the movabledogmay be shifted upon its pivot radially-of the escapement wheel by any desired means, a preferable form of which comprises the lever 62, pivoted at 63 upon the yoke and having its inner end 6 1- seated in a recess 65 formed on the movable dog 4&5, so as to provide an actuating connection therewith. This recess may be formed by a projection 66 from the dog against which the end 6 of the lever bears. The opposite end 67 of the releasing lever is adapted to seat in the open or bifurcated end 68 of a push link 69. This link may be actuated by any desired connections, for instance such as shown in my Patent-No. 987,766, of March 28, 1911, wherein a release bail 70 mounted upon a pivot 71 .iSfconnect-ed at 72 with a push link 69 to effect a reciprocating motion thereoffi Upon the same pivot Tl a brake bail '73 is mounted and; carries an upright 7 f upon which a brake shoe 75 is mounted to engage'the disk 27 when the escapement is released. a rocking yoke pivotedthereon and carrying a fixed dog, an escapement wheel cooperating with said dog, a cooperating movable dogpivotally mounted upon said yoke to' travel laterallyand circumferentially of said wheel, a slotted connection at the pivot of said movable dog to permit its movement radially of said wheel, a rock lever pivoted upon the yoke intermediate its ends and having one end seated upon said movable dog, and means for actuating the other end of said lever.

In a typewriter, the combination. with a rocking escapement mechanism, of means extended therefrom for actuating a ribbon feed, a typebar actuated universal ball having an arm disposed to contact with said escapement mechanism in. substantial alinement with said means, independent means from said bail'extended beneath the escapement to actuate a ribbon vibrating member,

22. In a typewriter, an escapement yoke comprising a horizontally disposed body portion provided with means for supporting fixed and movable dogs, pivoting lugs at each side of said body, and angularly disposed uprightscarried by the body above the pivots thereof to be engaged by a bail member.
23. In a typewriter, an escapement yoke comprising a body portion provided with means for supporting fixed and movable dogs, pivoting lugs for said body,oand longitudinal arms extending from the body toward opposite sides of the typewriter and adapted to receive ribbon feed pawls.

In a typewriter, an escapement yoke comprisinga body portion provided with means for supporting fixed and movable dogs, pivoting lugs at each side of said body, uprights carried by the body above the pivots thereof to be engaged by a bail member, oppositely extending longitudinal arms from the body adapted to receive ribbon feed pawls, and connecting means at the front and rear of said body to receive tensioning devices for the movable dog and yoke respectively.

In a typewriter, an escapement mechanism comprising a motor provided with an escapement wheel having peripheral teeth projecting in the plane thereof, a rocking member disposed parallel with said wheel with its axis intersecting that of the wheel, fixed and movable dogs both carried by said member at one side of said axis and at opposite faces of the wheel to laterally traverse the teeth thereof, and a angular swinging actuating extension from said member at the opposite side of its axis from said dogs.
26. In a typewriter, an escapement mechanism comprising a motor provided with an escapement wheel having peripheral teeth, a rocking member disposed parallel to said wheel with its axis intersecting that of the wheel, a fixed dog carried by said member at one side of its axis, a cooperating movable dog thereon provided with an elongated aperture at its pivoted end and a releasing seat intermediate its ends, and a release lever having one end engaging said seat to elfect a movement of the dog in a substantially straight path.
