To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM Semen, a citizen of the United States, residin at Topeka, in the county of Shawnee and Estate of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Davenports, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in furniture of the type known as bed davenports which may be converted either into a settee or a bed at will.

The present invention relates more particularly to the construction of the back of the davenport and the manner in which it is mounted.

One important feature resides in providing the back with integral extensions which overlap the arms of the davenport in such manner that there will be no visible joint between said back and arms to detract from the appearance of the davenport.

Another feature resides in mounting the back in such manner that it will rest upon the seat and prevent the same from tipping up or shifting about when sat or reclined upon, but can be easily lifted by hand from the seat when the davenport is to be converted into a bed.

Other features will hereinafter appear and in order that the invention may be fully understood, reference will now be had to the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a davenport equipped with the invention.

Fig. 2 is a reduced detail perspective view of the back with the upholstery removed.

Fig. 3 is a side elevation with one of the sides of the davenport removed to show the mechanism for operably supporting the back.

Fig. 4. is a similar view to Fig. 3, with the back in raised position.

Fig. 5 is a perspective view of another form of davenport with the upholstery removed.

Fig. 6 is a perspective of the form disclosed by Fig. 5, covered with upholstery.

equipped with blocks 14, which rest on top of the arms 12 when the back 4 is in lowered position. The end pieces 10 of the back are reinforced with metal straps 16 to the lower end of which a pair of levers 18 are connected by pivots 20. The levers 18 are mounted on fulcrums 22 carried by brackets 24: secured to the rear framework 26 of the davenport 2. The free ends of the levers 18 ad jacent the fulcrums 22 are connected to the upper ends of counterbalance springs 30, which are connected at their lower ends to bolts or other fastenings 32 secured to the frame 26.

32 designates a pair of arms each of which is connected at one end by a pivot 36 to the upper portion of the adjacent strap 16 and connected at its opposite end by a pivot 38 to a bracket l0 fixed to the frame 26.

By mounting the back 1 as shown and described, its bottom rail 8 rests upon the folded seat 42 of the davenport when said back 41: is in lowered position and prevents said seat 4L2 from tipping or shifting about when sat or reclined upon. When the davenport is to be converted into a bed the back can be readily raised by hand to the .position disclosed by Fig. 1, by a slight forward and upward movement which is assisted by the springs 30. After the back has been raised it is held in raised position by the springs 30 until lowered by hand.

In the form disclosed by Figs. 5 and 6, the construction and operation are the same, as evidenced by corresponding reference numerals with exponents a, excepting that the blocks 14 are dispensed with and the extensions 50 on the back i are curved at their under sides to fit over the upholstered arms 12. i

From the foregoing description it is apparent that I have produced a davenport in which the back can be raised or lowered with but little effort on the part of the operator, and by providing the back with blocks or extensions which project over the arms there will be no visible joints between these parts to detract from the appearance of the davenport. This type of: back also affords a construction not liable to warp or get out of shape.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
