Description

H. J. WHEELER.
MANIFOLD HEATER FOR AUTOMOBILES.
APPLICATION FILED 050.13. 1919.
INVENTOR,
A TTORNE Y.
UNITED STATES HARRY J. WHEELER, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
MANIFOLD-HEATER FOR AUTOMOBILES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 23, 19%.
Application filed December 13, 1919. Serial No. 344,726.
To (:12 iii/tom it may ammo m Be it known that l, TTARRY J. l l 'rrinninn, a citizen ol the United titates, residing at Kain sas City, in the county of Jackson. and l" tate of Missouri, have invented a new and uselful lrlanitold-lleater tor .iiutomobiles, ot which the ifollowing is a specification.
The invention relates to manifold heaters for automobiles. and the object oi my i1rveu tion is to provide a cheap heating device which may be readily attached on the automobile motor and heat the intake manifold to effect a prompt starting; oi the motor in Cold and :ti'eezirig temperatures.
T attain this object by means oi. the construction and combination of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawing in 'Wl1ieh-l*igure 1, is a side elevation oi? the front portion o't an automobile, partly broken away to disclose the intake and er:- haust manifolds, and showing my invention in place to heat the former; Fig. 9., is a top plan View of a heati? device constructed in aceordz'ince with my invention; Fig. 3, is a cross section ot the same on the line -l? in Fig. 2; d, is a plan view oi. the lnirner achet and Fig. 5, is a plan view oi? the bestos filler tor the burner Similar niunerals or reference rotor to cor responding parts throughout the several YlGWS.
The numeral 1, designates the hood corerin;- ot the motor whieh is provided with the customary intake manifold 53, and exhaust manifold l, whirh are secured on the motor by clamps 5. The inanitold heater (5, eon'iprises a metal trough-shaped member f, on the outer end oi? which is termed a bay 8, adapted for receiving; :iuel such as oil. gasolene, paraih'n, and lil-re conilnrstible substances and a substantially l.-sl'1aped I lat arm 9. integral with the inner end of the ineinher the toot portion or the arm being; or? set a suitable distanee from the body oi? the member. so that the mom may be held at a distance from the vertical portion oil? the arm. 6
A burner member 10. which rz'insists oil a suitable pad 01? non-combustible materiel ll, preterablj asbestos tabrie which is rolled to form a cylindrical body and then. wrapped around by a metal aehet 191, having}; a plarality oi. perforated apertures 13, is lodged in the member "2', and extending a little distanee in the bay 8, therein. 7
The heat" device is attached on the motor by impos. rig the upper end or the arn'i '0, between the manifold clamp 5, and the adjacent inaniiiild and in such a manner that the trough or the member '2" shall be positioned directly under the intake manifold. The burner member is then lodged in the member 7, and tool placed in the bay 8, tron]. whenre it tlows into the trough proper and inirtialiy subniorgingg; the burner member, the latter bei11 :tormed to here a diameter large enough to allow one third, apprrnriinately. thereo't to above the trough oi the member 'i'. In cold and 1; ring temperateresi it is my ex.- perience the motor seldom ran be started promptly. berause the cold has chilled the parts, particularly the maniilblds, and conse quently the gasolene evaporation and expansion is To warm and heat old the operator simply places a quantity or tool in the heater, lights the some, and the flame produced 1' i .llitS the intake i'namfold and UClJtILQllt as p: s of the motor and. in a tow seeoinls ot' time. rras is generated and the motor star The liquid :liuol invades the asbestos tiller oi? the burner member and is ignited and burns at the pertorations in the jacket thereof,
' l r etli'ectinp a i'initorm heating ot' the claim is it. iimniiold heater sistinp; o1. an open tro'l h-shapml liquid fuel receptarle having; an end basin undo verticall extending; arm adapted for attaching on the manifold. and a portable burner ii'ieni ber lod ed in the trough out said receptacle and e riding; into the basin therein. said burner inen'iber CtilllllillSlllg a rolled pad oft non-eomb'ustible material which is rolled in a porters ted sheet oi metal to term. a nick.
