Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug. 23, 1921.
Application filed November 25, 1919. Serial No. 340,528.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, KURT R. KOEHLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Merrill, in the county of Lincoln and State of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spark-Intensifiers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in a new and useful improvement in spark intensifiers for spark plugs, and provides an extremely simple, cheap and effectual attachment which may be applied to any of the well-known forms of spark plugs to secure an intensified spark, by the provision of a secondary spark gap. The device may be secured to the plug in the same manner as the wire terminal is ordinarily attached, thus obviating the necessity of any particular tool for its installation. The wire terminal is attached to the device in the same way that it is ordinarily attached to the plug. Moreover, my device is so designed that the secondary spark gap provided by the device may be closed by the adjustment of the device, thus obviating the necessity of removing the device,
when it is desired to dispense with the secondary spark gap. Experience in the use of this device has shown that excellent ignition results may be secured in spite of broken porcelains in the spark plugs, since the production of the secondary spark gap by the use of this device, intensifies the spark to such a degree as to overcome the defect in the lug.
l y device is embodied in the details of construction hereinafter pointed out, and the scope of my invention is fully set forth in the following claims. r
In the drawings: 7
Figure 1 is a side view of a spark plug provided with my device.
Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section on the line 22 Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged side view of a portion of the spark plug and the device in a different position from that shown in Fig. 1.
In the drawings:
A designates any well known form .of spark plug in which is the electrode A provided with the threaded upper end A surrounded by the collar A which provides a contact plate for the spark plug A. A nut A is adapted to be applied to the threaded end A The foregoing construction constitutes the binding post of the spark plug A. My improved device has an insulated ring B,
which is provided with two oppositely disposed orifices'B and B Through either of these orifices (B indicated in the drawings) the threaded end A may pass, and by the use of the nut A the ring B may be securely looked upon the spark plug A. Through the other orifice, (B indicated in the drawings) the combined electrode and binding post C is inserted, in axial alinement with the electrode A. Within the ring B upon the electrode C, there is mounted the lock nut C and upon the portion of the electrode C without the ring B is mounted the second look nut C Between the nut C andv the ring B, there is provided the washer C which serves as a contact plate for the reception of the terminal D of the conductor wire D.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that the device may be mounted upon the spark plug A by means of the nut A, and the electrode C may be adjusted in relation to the upper end A of the electrode A to provide any length of spark gap between the two electrodes. By the use of the nuts C and C the electrode C may be securely locked in position upon the ring B and at the same time the terminal D may be secured in electrical contact with the electrode C.
If it is desired to dispense with the secondary spark gap between the electrodes A and C, the electrode C may be adjusted in the orifice B so that it is brought into contact with the upper end A of the electrode A as indicated in Fig. 3, thus securing the normal adjustment of the ignition system without the necessity for the removal of the device from the spark plug A.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:

orifices, one of which is adapted to receive therethrough the binding post of a spark plug; a second binding post adapted to be inserted through the other orifice; a lock nut upon said spark plug binding post adapted to lock said ring upon said post; a lock nut upon said second binding post within the ring; and a second look nut upon said second binding post outside of the ring; the said lock nuts upon said second binding post adapted to lock said second binding post upon said ring.
2. In an attachment for spark plugs, an insulated ring adapted to be locked directly ltl upon the binding post of'a spark plug by said ring; and a contact plate between said means of the binding post locknut; athreadring, and said second lock nut and adapted ed electrode adapted to be mounted in said to co-act with said second lock nut to form 10 ring in axial alinement with said binding a second binding post.
