To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, AUTHOR D. WORKMAN, a citizen of the United States, residingat Knoxville, in the county of Knox and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Culinary Implements, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to culinary implements and more particularly to can and jar openers.

The object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient device combining in one article a jar, can and bottle opener.

Another object is to so construct such a device that while strong and e-fiicient it is cheap to manufacture rendering it obtainable by all housekeepers. 7

With these and other objects in view,the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claim.

In the embodiment illustrated two seg mental jaws 1 and 2 are shown constructed of any suitable strain resisting metal and pivotally connected at one end asshown at 3. These jaws are preferably formed of metal strips to form band-like gripping members and are provided at their free ends with laterally extending arms 4 here shown in the form of rods on which are mounted wooden handles 5. These handles 5 are of a length substantially equal to the length of the rods 4 or slightly less than the length of said rods and are bored longitudinally to receive said rods, their inner ends being inclined and abutting the outer faces of the free ends of the jaws 1 and 2. The rods project at their terminals beyond the outer ends of the handles 5 and are threaded to receive nuts 6 between which and the jaws said handles are clamped. Brass or other metal caps 7 are mounted on the outer ends of the handles 5 incasing the nuts 6 and forming an ornament for the handles.-

Mounted on the outer face of one of the jaws is a can opener 10 which is here shown substantially wedge-shaped in form with the wider portion thereof secured to the jaw ormade integral therewith its cutting point extended toward the pintle 3 which connects the jaws 1 and 2, said point being spaced a suflicient distance from the jaw to permit the ready insertion of the point in the can to be opened, the outer face of the inner end of this can opening blade 10 has a heel 11 designed to rest on the top of the can and form a fulcrum when the device is in use.

As here shown this can opener 10 is mounted on jaw 2 while jaw 1 carries a bottle cap removing hook 12 which opens toward the handle end of said jaw and is adapted for removing metal caps from bottles.

The inner faces of the jaws 1 and 2 are serrated to form biting teeth 13 which are designed to grip the jar top in connection with which the device is to be used.

When this device is to be used as a jar opener the handles 5 will be moved away from each other to open the jaws 1 and 2 a sufiicient distance to enable them to surround the jar top in connection with which they are to be used. The handles are then brought together and force applied thereto to clampingly engage the jaws 1 and 2 with the jar top and then by moving the handles in unison in one direction the top may be readily removed, or if desired the jar may be held between the jaws 1 and 2 they being made band-like for this purpose so that an extended area may be gripped thereby lessening the danger of breaking the jar.

The use of the can opener 10 and the cap remover 12 as well as the cork screw 9 are obvious and no detail description thereof is deemed necessary.

From the above description it will be obvious that the implement constituting this invention is capable of various uses and that the curved outer faces of the jaws 1 and 2 cooperate with the openers 10 and 12 form ing combined fulcrums and levers for actuating them.

The preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed in the drawings and set forth in the specification, but it will be un derstood that any modifications within the scope of the claimed invention may be made in the construction without departing from the principle of the invention or sacrificing.

What is claimed is:

A device of the class described comprising segmental bandlike gripping jaws pivotally connected at one end and merging at their other ends into integral rod-like arms extending at an obtuse angle therefrom, the free ends of said arms being threaded and provided with nuts, wooden handles through which said arms extend and which are secured between said nuts and the free ends of said jaws, the inner faces of said jaws being provided with biting elements.
