FURNACE-FRONT.
Application filed August 11, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT ALEXANDER THoMPsoN, a subject of the King ofGreat Britain, of 9 Cleveland Terrace, North Shields, in the county of Northumberland, England, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Furnace-Fronts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to steam boiler and other furnace fronts and has for its object to provide a front that enables either solid or liquid fuels to be used, and to change over quickly from one kind of fuel to the other without having to disconnect any fittings or pipes to enable the change to be made. Moreover my improved furnace front permits of using both solid and liquid fuels at the same time. I
I utilize the door, ashpit damper, dead plate, fire-bars, front plate, and baflles for protecting the front plate as existing in an 4 ordinary coal burning furnace, although in some cases when converting an old furnace new parts may have to be made where the condition or design of the old parts is not suitable. To such a furnace front to adapt it to my purpose I introduce an extension piece between the coal door and the fire opening, and I build on this extension piece a casing or chamber provided with air admission dampers, internal guide and radiating vanes, air tubes, and burners thereby fitting it to burn liquid fuel without interfering with the coal burning parts.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a half front elevation and half vertical transverse section taken on line 1-1, Fig. 2 of the furnace front.
Fig. .2 is a vertical longitudinal central section of the same.
Fig. 3 is a half plan and half horizontal section on the line X, X, Fig. 1, and
Fi 4 is a section of the air tube on the line Y, Fig. 3.
Like letters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several figures.
A is the front plate of the furnace, carrying a protecting bafile plate B. C is the coal door, D the ashpit damper, E the dead plate, F the fire bars. These parts remain as used in an ordinary coal burning furnace, excepting that the frame of the coal door instead of being fixed directly to the front Specification of Letters Patent.

plate A is brought out by interposing between said door frame and the front plate an extension piece G of any desired or suitable depth. Around this extension piece is built a casing or chamber H which is secured to the extension piece and the front plate A in any suitable manner. The casing H may be furnished with a central vertical dividing plate K to make the two sides of the chamber independent of each other. L and M are guide and radiating vanes for guiding and heating the air which enters the casing H and insuring that the air shall pass over the whole of the surface of the front plate A before entering the air tube inserted through holes in the front of the casing H, and in the front plate A, as well as in the baffle B and are secured tothe front of the casing H in any suitable manner for example by means of studs or bolts and a flange a formed on each tube for this purpose. a, n are holes in the wall of the tube to admit the air coming from the casing H. The outer end of the tube is closed, while the inner end is open. An oil burner 1? passes through the center of each tube N, the same being supported by a holder such as R, Figs. 1 and 3. V
The air supply to. the casing H enters through dampers S of any suitable design. Additional air may be admitted to the furnace by means of a shutter T in the coal door C.
Suitable connections, pipes and apparatus, not shown, supply oil fuel to the burners as commonly used for this purpose and as the burners are clear of the fire-opening it is not necessary to remove any of the oil supply parts or connections when firing with coal.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In combination with a furnace having a front plate, a baffle extending inwardly of the front plate, an extension outwardly of the front plate, a coal door casing secured to said extension, a substantially semi-circular casing above and extending partially about said extension, guide and radiating vanes in the semi-circular casing extending from the extension in opposite directions and having their outer ends turned down wardly, air tubes projecting through the semi-circular casing and bafile being closed through the tubes and damper controlled air at their outer ends and open at their inner inlets in the upper portion of the casing. ends and provided with openings 1n their HERBERT ALEXANDER THOMPSON sides communlcating wlth the interior of the semi-circular casing, the tubes being located Witnesses: 1
Within the space partially circumscribed by A. MITGHERISON,
the vanes and extension, oil burners passing JAMES FROLIES.
