f CANOE.
f f NVhile designed more particularly for useY in conjunction with the typev of small, paddle controlled boats known technically as canoes, our invention is applicable to hand-propelled craft generally,-the object navigation, mitigate lateral rocking, and prevent the capsizing of the boat in so far as possible'.
The invention consists primarily in the use of a transversely movable seat for the occupant of'the boat, which seat is somounted as to adapt itself automatically to the motion of the craft and in such manneras to render the weight of the person occupying the seat available for the purpose of trimming the boat by neutralizing any tendency of the craft to deviate from proper alinement; and secondarily the invention consists in the use, in conjunction with 'the movabley gravity seat. of the character designated of .n controlled means which prevent the seat from moving in the wrong direction.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1, is a perspective view. of our yequilibrious seat and the adjacent portion which itis mounted;
Fig. 2, is a transversesection of the canoe, showing our equilibrious seat and mount in rear elevation, and illustrating the function thereof;
Fig. 3, is a 'top View of our"equilibrious seat and adjacent portion of the canoe;

Fig. 5, is a section taken upon plane of line 5 5, Fig. 4;
Fig. 6, is a section line 6 6, Fig. 5,

desired or well lknown shape and construction,c, being the gunwale Yto and between which the ends of ourtransversely movable seat S, are resilientlyattached, as by coiled springs s, or/equivalent means'which tend contsantly to centralize saidy seat as related to the longitudinal axisV of the craft.
The seat S, is rigidly securedmedially to HALPERN, or' NEWARK, NEW
a post P, the lower end of which isA pivotally V- supported o n a fixed fulcrum f, mountedon the base of a standard b, integraluwith the base plate B, which is axed tothe ooring of the boat. n Pivotally suspended atm-upon the upper end of the seat post P, is a foot rest R, which. i
is free to swing, pendulumrlike, independ!` said seatpost P,-as shown entk of, but upon, in Fig. 2. The movement of the the seat itself, is
lateral play or. extent of seat p ost P, and hence of governedby a pinbx, af.-
fixed to the upper part 0f the'standard 2),.
projecting into a slot p2, inthe seat posti?,-V
said slot p2, being yconcentric with theful-- of the slot p2, consti-A crum f, and the ends tuting shoulders. which limit the sway ofthe seat in either direction.y
. The seat post P, is also formed withv crossl pivotally suspended p4, the lower extremitiesk arms p3, p3 on which are gravity pawls p4, y of which just clear,coinci :lental shoulders b', b', on the base plate B, when the? said f post is perpendicular as related to said base plate, as' in all but Fig. 2, of the drawings. When the vesseltilts raises one or the other of thes'egretention shoulders b, b, into position to engage with and prevent furthergravitati'on of its par so that in case the occupant of the seat were to lean in the wrong direc-4 tion, or toward theV lower side of the boat, tending to rock the seat in that direction, the gravity pawl p4, on that side would engage with its detent shoulder b', and by preventing the shifting of the center of gravity to the lower side of the canoe, obviate all danger of the capsizing thereof. In other words, the gravity pawls insure the maintainance of the center of gravity on the ticular pawl 294 higher side of the boat when the latter rocks laterally. sx, s", are cross bars on the upper side of the seat S, which enable the occupant to centralize his position thereon.
To enable the occupant of the seat S, to
laterally however it balance himself conveniently and comfortably in conformity with the lateral rockingof the boat We provide the pendulous foot rest R, which admits of the swinging of the feet in a direction opposite to the inclination assumed by the upper part .oi the body, While at the same time by reason of its pivotal connection with the seat post,
adding the Weight of the feet andlegs to the aggregate weight positioned beyond the erpendicular line fu, of the standard b, when the boat is rocked in either direction, so that the total Weight of the occupant of the the seat is available in automatically trimming and correcting the alinement of the craft in the manner above set forth.
In order to limitthe extent of lateral movementy of the foot rest R, its suspending member R', may be formed 4with an elongated slot r', through which the lpin bx, on the standard b, projects, as shovvi more particularly ink Figs. 5 and 7, thus, allovvingtlie foot rest to swing on its pivotal support fr, While limiting its extent of motion in either direction, and at the same time insuring a swing opposite to that assumed by the seat post as related'to the fulcrum f, as will be seen by reference to Fig. 2.
Of course the springs s, s, or equivalent retractile means, perform an important function in conjunction with the pivotally mounted seat in absorbing and neutralizing the strain, `and stabilizing the motion of thecraft,tending constantly, as they do, to maintain the seat in medial position with its supporting post P, in substantial alinement with the perpendicular standard ZJ.'
Thus mounted and equipped, our stabilizing seat affords effectual protection against any tendency to capsize or rock excessively, even in relatively rough Water and weather, and adds materially to the safety, comfort and convenience of the navigator.
What We claim as our invention and sire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. In combination with a boat of the character designated, a seat movably mounted,
and elastic resilient means tending to mainacter designated,
' pivotally tain the seat in normal position, for the purpose described.
2. In combination with a boat of the chara seat mounted on a pivotally supported post, and elastic resilient 4means tending to maintain the seat in normal position, for the purpose described.
3. In combination with a boat of the character designated, a seat rigidly mounted on a supported post and elastic resilient means tending to maintain the seat in normal position, for the purpose described.
4L. In combination with a boat ofthe character designated, a seat mounted on a pivotally supported post, elastic resilient means tending to maintain the seat in'normal position anda foot rest pivotally and pendulously vsupported on said purpose described.
5. In combination Witha boatof the character designated, a seat movably mounted,
elastic resilient means tending to maintain said seat in normal position, and means for limiting the extent of motion of said movably mounted seat, for the purpose described.
6. In combination with a. boat of the cliaracter designated, a seat mounted on a pivotally supported post, elastic'resilient means tending to maintain the seat and post 'in normal position, and a 'iiXed standard adjacent to said seat post formed with means for limiting the movement of said post, for the purpose described.
7. In combination with a boat of the character designated, a seat mounted on a .piv- .otally supported post, elastic resilient means tending to maint-ain the seat and post in normal position,`a foot rest pivota'lly and pendulously supported on said seat post, and
