To aZZ whom it may concer Be it known that I, Pnrnn M. ren, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county o Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Deposit Appliances; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it' appertains to make and use the same.

This intention relates to safety deposit vaults and means for insuring against the detachment of locks from the doors thereof behind which the usual safety deposit box is placed. The present inrention is an iniprovement on the constructon shown in my prior application, Serial Number 2985451, filed May 20, 1920, being concerned with the connection of a bar directly to the lock on the rear side of a safety deposit yault door, which bar, at its upper and lower ends, when the door is in closed position comes against solid shoulders on the upper and lower sides of the Yault and prccludes any rearward movement of the lock with respect to the door and consequcnt detachment thereof from the door, with access to the contents of the safety deposit box in the Vault. Practically all of the doors of the cells or Vaults in which the boxes are placed have a lock attached to the rear side of the door'by screws and said locks have parts extending through the door into which the keys for Operating the lock are inserted. These projecting parts render it comparatively easy to gain access to the box behind the door, blows directed againstsaid projecting key receiving parts serving to strip the threads from the screws attaching the lock to the door and thus detach the lock which is driven backward into the Vault or cell in which the box is located. The lock alone is of little or no protection against entrance into the cell.

My prior application, above identified shows one means for safeguarding the lock against such detachment from the door. In the present invention, a very simple and effective means for attaining the same ends is disclosed and one more practical from a manufacturing and installation standpoint. In Fig. 1, the invention is shown in connection with a two cell Vault for containing boxes, it of course being understood that the invention is applicable to each cell and the door thereof no matter how little or great the number of the cells may be. The vault has a top 1, a bottom 2, back 3 and sides 4, a parttion P paralleling the sides 4 dividing the Vault into two cells. The front sides of the cells are open and each cell is equipped with a door 7 for closing the same. At the front of each cell a portion of the under side of the top l, and of the upper side of the bottom 2 is cut away whereby shoulders o and 6 are .formed on the top 1 and bottom 2, respectively, as shown. A lock 8 is located against the rear side of the door 7 and attached thcreto by screws 9 in the usual manner, and said screws, at the same time are utilized for the attachment of a sheet metal plate 10 to the rear Side of the lock, the intermediate portion of which is bent to make a recess shaped for the reception of a Vertical bar 12, spot welded or otherwise permanently attached to the recessed portion 11 of the plate 10. The bar ll is of a length and is so positioned that when the door 7 is closed, its upper and lower ends come directly in front of shoulders 5 and 6, respect vely, the ends of the bar practically abuttng against such shoulders.

The key projections 13 to the lock extend through the door in the usual manner and are readily struck so that the force of the blows may be transmitted to the screws 9 to detach the lock from the door. With the present Construction, however, any attempted movement of the lock rearwardly into the cell is immediately stopped by the bar 12 which is stopped from inward movement by shoulders 5 and 6. In order to drive the lock from the door, it is necessary to either drive the metal at shoulders 5 and 6 ahead of the bar, or bend the bar sufliciently that its ends will pass by the shoulders, a practical impossibility as the bar is a very stili? and rigid member and the metal of the vaults is not easily disrupted and driven ahead of the bar from blows applied to the projecting parts 13 of the lock. In fact, detachment of the lock fromthe door and access to the box ll within the cell is a practical impossibility' and cannot take place successfully. The bar is strong and is held at both ends when the door is in closed position, completely safeguarding the lock from detachment from the door. The attachment of the bar to the rear side of the lockis 'very simple yet an effective one, and little or no change is required for its use other than the provision of the hacking shoulders, which may be provided as described, or in any other equivalent manner, so long as permanently fixed shoulders for the ends of the bar to r bear against are furnished.

In a device of the character described, a receptacle having an open side, a door for closing said open side, a lock positioned against the rear side of the door, screws for attaching the lock to the door, a bar positioned vertically against the rcar side of the lock, means held against the lock by said screws for securing the bar in fixed relation to the lock and'` door, and stop means on the upper and lower sides of the receptacle against which the upper and lower ends of the bar come when the door is closed, substantially as described. 4. In a safety deposit vault having a cell for the reception of a box, said cell having an open front, a door for closing the open front of: the cell, a lock attached to the rear side of the door for looking the door in closed position, a bar attached to the rear side of the lock and movable therewith, and stop means on opposite sides of the cell formed on the inner sides thereof and adapted to engage with the opposite ends of the bar when the door'is locked in closed position, substantially as described.
