To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CARL BENNETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Duboistown, in the county of Lycoming and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Umbrellas, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an attachment for umbrellas, contemplating particularly the provision of a clip which may be applied to an umbrella staff adjacent to the handle, whereby a ladys handbag, purse or other similar article, commonly provided with a carrying chain or cord, may be suspended from the umbrella stafi and thereby conveniently carried.

The object of the invention is to provide a simple, cheap and convenient device of the stated character which may be readily applied to the staff of any ordinary ladys umbrella or parasol, for the purpose of enabling the user, when the umbrella or parasol is open and employed, to suspend a handbag or other article from the umbrella staii, thereby relieving the user from the inconvenience and embarrassment of carrying many articles in or suspending them from the hand or wrist while the umrella is also being held to shield the user from rain, snow or the sun.

The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which:

In carrying my invention into practice I provide a clip or suspending device 1 adapted to be applied to the rod or stail 2 of an umbrella or parasol immediately above the handle 3 thereof. This clip or attaching device is made of a single piece of spring wire bent to provide a pair of upper and lower parallel arms 4 and 5, a spring clasp member 6 and a pair of hook-shaped retaining members 7 and 8, the latter terminating in an upright guard finger 9.

the retaining members 7 and 8, the clasp 6 extending transversely of and connecting said arms 4 and 5 at one end, and the opposite ends of said arms 4 and 5 being bent on curved lines to provide the substantially semi-circular retaining members 7 and 8. The clasp 6 is formed of the intermediate portion of the wire, which is longitudinally bowed or curved and projected inwardly toward the members 7 and 8 substantially in bail-form, the central portion of said clasp 6 being bent inwardly toward the adjacent ends of the arms 4 and 5 to form a contracted entrance to nearly circular loops 10 formed at the juncture of the arms 4- and 5 with the ends of the clasp, said loops being adapted to receive and engage the rod or staff 2. The device may be engaged with the rod or staff 2 by positioning it so that the rod or staff will lie in line with the contracted throat or entrance to the loops 10 and then sliding said device in a proper direction, the inbent portion of the clasp 6 receding to allow the rod to enter the loops and then returning by its spring action to normal position to spring clamp the device in position upon the rod. When the device is so applied the lower arm 5 and loop 10 may be arranged to bear upon the upper end of the handle 3, whereby the device will be stably supported in position and prevented from tilting or canting or otherwise working and marring the finish of the rod 2.

The retaining members 7 and 8 are formed by bending the ends of the arms 4 and 5 semi-circularly in opposite directions so as to provide an article receiving space or loop 11 bounded thereby. These retaining members 7 and 8 are arranged to lap or have their adjacent sides abutting so as to close the entrance to said space or loop 11, but by spreading said members 7 and 8 apart an entrance way may be provided for the passage of an article to and from the loop. The arm 8 terminates in the upwardly projecting guard member 9, which is adapted to retain the suspended article against possibility of displacement and in a centered position with relation to the handle 3, and said member further serves as a finger-piece by means of which the arm 8 may be spread with relation to the arm 7 to open the entrance way. above-mentioned.

The device may be employed for suspending a handbag, purse or other similar article 12 of that kind having a loop suspending chain or strap 13, as shown particularly in Fig. 1. In applying the article the guard 9 i is pressed outward to spread the arm 8 with relation to the arm 7, and the strap 13. is then entered in the space and end of the member 7 or between the arm 5 and the guard 9 and moved from the entrance way until it fully enters the space or loop 11 and extends across the same and also across the members 7 and 8 and is suspended therefrom. WVhen thus applied the strap 13' will be supported by position against possibility of displacement and the bag or other element 12 will be suspended in a position parallel with the handle 3, allowing the latter to be clasped in the hand of the user without inconveniences and annoyances resulting from an attempt to hold the bag or other article in the same hand at the same time. In order to release the suspended article it is simply necessary to bring the strap 13 to a position to again pass around and through the entrance way mentioned, whereupon it may be readily and conveniently detached.

It will thus be seen that my invention provides an article of the character and for the purpose described which is simple of construction, convenient and eflicient in use, adapted to be easily and economically manufactured and sold, and which may be nickelbetween the arm 4:

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim: a

1. A device for attachment to umbrella handles for the purpose of suspending arcomprislng a length of wire bent to provide two parallel arms, a rod engaging clasp connecting said arms at one end and extending transversely between the same, and reversely curved or coiled members at the opposite ends 01: said arms arranged to lap and adapted to form a retaining space or loop and a normally closed passage-way thereto.

2. A device of the character described comprising a single length of wire bent to provide a pair of parallel arms, a clasp connecting said transversely between the same, lapping memhere, at the opposite ends of the arms curved in opposite directions and forming a retaining space and a normally closed entrance way thereto, and a guard extending from one of said members into said space and between the same and the clasp.
