DAVID W. BUSH, JR., 0F BARTLEY, NEBRASKA.
COMBINED SETTING AND BROODING COOP.
Application led November 11, 1920.
To all whom t may coi/acera.'
Be it known that I, Dxvm lV. BUSH, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Bartley, in the county of Redwillow and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Setting and Brooding Coops, of which the following is a specification, reference being .had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to combined setting and brooding coops.
An important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is extremely simple in construction, and yet contains numerous advantages calculated to reduce to a minimum the labor involved in handling setting and brooding hens and their broods; and furthermore consists in the construe-tion and arrangement of the coop in Such a manner as to render the Same extremely economical.
A further object of the invention is to provide a coop having an attached run, the run and the coop being connected by rigid skids or sills, the coop being Separated from the run by a removable sliding door.
A further object of the invention is to provide a coop having therein a removable partition dividing the coop into two Sections, one of which is adapted for the reception of the nest, the coop being further provided with a hinged door in the ioof thereof permitting access at all times to the hen and her brood.
VOther objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent throughout the course of the following description:
In the accompanying drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration are shown preferred embodiments of my invention, and wherein like reference characters designate like parts throughout:
Figure 1 is a sectional plan of a unit setting and brooding pen constructed in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is a similar view of a multiple unit coop and pen;
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional taken through a unit coop, and
Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken through a multiple unit coop.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 10 indicates sills or skids, of which in the unit construction of my device two are employed, one at each side of the coop and run. At one end the view Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 16', 1921.
Serial No. 423,256.
sills 10 are covered by flooring boards, as at 11, to form a base for the coop'. At each corner of this base vertical upiiglits 12 are disposed about which are Secured the sides la of the coop. The Side facing toward the uncovered ends of the skids 10 has only the upper section thereof covered, terminating above `the i'ioor as indicated at ltfL leaving an opening at the bottom portion thereof forming a passage to and from the coop.
Secured to the sills 10, exteriorly of this wall, are vertical upriglits 15, and intermediate these upriglits and the adjacent uprights 12 of the coop proper is slidably mounted a door 16, forming a removable closure for the opening left in the side walls. A removable board 17 is provided of suiiicient length to extend diagonally across the coop and abut the side faces of the upriglits 12 thereof at their juncture with the wall. This board 17 serves through the nesting period to divide the coop into two portions one of which may be employed as a nest. Subsequentlyv to the hatching of the eggs the board may be readily removed, as will hereinafter appear, and the nests likewise removed to afford plenty of room for the hen and lier brood.
A roof is provided embodying rafters 1S which are adapted to abut and rest upon the upper ends of the vertical members 12 and which are held in the proper position by spaced horizontally extending latli 18, thc spaces between the lath permitting ventilation through the coop, These rafters 18 are covered preferably by shiplap in such a manner as to the roof with projecting eaves, one of which overhangs the exposed ends of the skids 10. This edge is provided with a longitudinally extending strip .19 combining with the roof to form a gutter to prevent precipitation of the water from the roof into the pen of the coop. The opposite side of the roof embodies a hinged section 20 forming a door by means of which access may be had to the roof and through which the door 17 or nest boards may be removed.
At the upper ends of the sills l0 are disposed vertical uprights 21 which combine with the post 15 to provide the corners of the pen. The pen is formed by securing to the sides of the vertical upriglits 15 and 21, spaced lath or strips 22 and likewise closing the end in this manner. The upper portion of the run is closed by a cover 23 `the art that the construction hereinbefore set forth lends itself very readily to the multiple unit construction. 1f such a construction is desired, as for example a double unit, an extra skid l() is provided which forms the demarka-tion or the central line, dividing the coops and runs. The yfloor of the coop is laid across the skids in the usual manner and is divided centrally by placing thereon at opposite Sides bars or vertical uprights 24 spaced apart a distance suilicient to permit the insertion therebetween of a partition 25. rfhe pen is divided centrally by posts? and 28 having the dividing- Wall 29 secured thereto and formed of spaced strips, as hereinbefore disclosed.k i
It Will be obvious that the construction as hereinbefore set forth is capable of some change Without in any manner departingfrom the spirit of my invention: and 1, therefore, do not limit myself to such specific structure, except as so limited by the subjoined claims. i
YVhat 1 claim is:
l. In a setting' and brooding coop,a rectangular lioor, vertical uprights secured to said floor` at the corners thereof, side walls secured to said uprights, a removable diago-A nally disposed partition Within the coop and abutting;r the side faces of diagonally opposed verticalV uprights y at their junction with the side Walls, and a roof for said coop comprising pairs of rafters adapted to abut and restupon the vertical ends of said uprights, spaced transverse members having` their ends secured to the rafters of each pair and a Weatherproof covering for said rafters, said covering being,f provided with a hinged portion forming;- a door through which said partitionmay be removed.
2. In a setting and brooding coop, a pair of spaced parallel sills, a rectangular floor secured to said sills at one end thereof, the sills projecting beyond the edge of the fioor at one side thereof, vert-ical uprigl'its secured to said ioor at the corners thereof,side Walls secured to said upria'hts, the side Wall next adjacent the exposed ends of said sills being discontinued at a point spaced from the floor to provide'an opening, vert-ical uprights secured to said sills adjacent the last-named side Wall, a slide disposed intermediate said last named uprights and the'end .of the coop formed by said last named side Wall and closing the opening;r formed therein, vertical uprights secured to the ends of said sills remotelfrom said floor, spaced strips con necting said last named uprights, spaced strips connecting said last-named uprights and the uprights `adjacent the lastwnamed Wall, said first and last named strips combining with said uprights and the coop to form a pen, a cover for said pen and a roof for said coop. j
3. In a setting and brooding coop, a pair of spaced parallel sills, a rectangular floor secured to said sills at one end thereof, said sills project-nmT beyond the edge of the v`floor at one side thereof, vertical uprights secured to said floor at the corners thereof, side Walls secured to said uprights, the side Wall next adjacent the exposed ends of said sills being discontinued at a point spaced from thetloor to provide an opening, vertical uprights secured to said sills adjacent the last-named side Wall, a slide disposed intermediate said last-named uprights. and the end of the coop formed by said last namedvside Wall and closinpythe opening; formed therein, vertical upright-s secured to the ends of said sills remote from said iioor, spaced strips connectinp; said last-named uprights, spaced strips connecting said last-named uprights and the uprights adjacent the last-named Wall, said first and last namedstrips combining With said uprights and the coop to form a pen, a cover for said penanda roof for said coop comprising pairs of rafters adapted to abut the upper ends of the vertical uprights secured to said floor, spaced 'transe verse members having; their ends secured to the rafters of each pair, a Weather-proof covering for said rafters and overhanging the lower ends thereof to form eaves-said covering being provided with a hinged portion forminga door affording access to the coop and a gutter strip secured to said covering at the end thereof overhanfring said peu to prevent precipitationof Water thereinto.
4f. In a setting' and broodingr coop, a rectane'ular floor, verticalluprights secured to said floor at the corners thereof, side Walls secured to said upriehts, spaced lpairs of uprifrhts secured to saidfloor at opposed sides thereof and abutting opposed Walls approximately centrally thereof, a partition extending transversely of said floor and having; its ends disposed intermediate the spaced pairs of uprights and a removable diagonally' disposed partition Within the coop at each side of said partition and abutting side faces of corresponding vertical upriahts Vof said lastynamed pair and of the vertical uprights secured to the corners of saidfloor diagonally opposed thereto.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aiiix my signature. 4
