CHARLES rnnnnnrc VAUGHAN, or LONDON, ENGLAND.
LAMP AND LAMP-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 16, 1921.
Application filed July 8, 1920. Serial No. 394,731.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES FRnnnRIo VAUGHAN, a subject of the King of England, residing at London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamps and LampHolders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to lamps and lamp holders, and has for its object to provide asimple and cheap construction wherein the lamp can be held in any position in the holder and can easily be released so as to allow the lamp to be swiveled in any direction, which is very convenient in the case of a lamp for a motor vehicle for enabling sign posts to be read etc.
According to this invention, the lamp shell is provided with a spherical or partispherical surface adapted to be gripped by a similarly shaped ring on the holder and means are provided for expanding and contracting the clamp. The clamp takes the form of a ring, which is split at one or more points, and means are provided for opening 01' closing the splits, as for instance by a screw device engaging the abutting ends of the ring.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the preferred method of carrying out this invention as applied to an electric lamp. In these,
Figure 1 is a front elevation, and
Fig. 2 is a side view partly in section.
Fig. 3 is a side View of a modification.
Like letters indicate like parts throughout the drawings.
The shell A of the lamp is spherical, or
. almost wholly so and its surface is gripped by a ring B the interior B of which is shaped to conform to the spherical surface of the shell. The ring is integral with a socket C adapted to fit upon a standard lamp bracket Z.
The ring B is split at ,D and the ends are formed with lugs E which are engaged by the threads of a right and left hand screw F having a lever F Thus by operating the screw the ring can be expended to free the shell and so allow it to be twisted or tilted, and can be tightened up to clamp the lamp shell in any desired position.
Preferably some suitable form of handle, such as G, is fitted to the lamp to facilitate moving it, and, in the case of an electric lamp, this handle may contain a switch, the lever of which is shown at G In some cases a band H (see Fig. 3) may surround and be attached to the shell A, and the outer surface of this may be parti-spherical and be engaged by the clamping ring B. Such a band would stiffen up the shell, and could be applied to a lamp shell, the outer surface of which is not spherical, as is shown.
Thus a very simple and easily operated swiveling lamp is provided.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. In an automobile lamp, the combination with the lamp casing having a spherical surface, of a split clamping ring fitting said surface, and a screw device for positively moving the ends of said clamping ring toward or away from each other causing the ring to tighten around the said casing or loosen therefrom.
2. An automobile lamp as specified in claim 1, in which the split clamping ring is formed with a socket adapted to receive a bracket,
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of a subscribing witness.
CHARLES FREDERIC VAUGHAN.
