RAIL-JOINT FASTENER.
Application fi led nine 11,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN Miisziinos, citizen of Hungary, residing at G-lenalum, in
tate oflVest Virthe county of Mingo and ginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Joint Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to rail joint fasteners for securing together, and to the ties, the ends of track rails.
The invention has for an obj ect to provide a novel form of rail joint fasteners which will act to securely hold the rail ends together, and which includes a simple form of locking means to prevent accidental loosen ing of the parts.
For further comprehension of the inven-' tion, and of the object and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention Then once inserted in the elements 15 are more particularly set forth.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a plan view showing a portion of a railroad track havin the invention applied thereto.
*ig. 2 is an inner side elevation of the fastening plate, with certain exterior parts broken away. i
Fig. 3 is a transverse section through a rail equipped with the invention, this view being taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 1 is a side view, with parts broken away of a pair of rail ends and the improved fastening means thereon.
Fig. 5 is a transverse vertical section on the line 55 of Fig. 2.
In, the drawings the numerals and 11.
indicate adjacent track rails, and 12 and 13 indicate the ties, the tie 12 being of reater width than the ties 13 and adapted or use at the rail joint. 1 v
fastening means comprises My improved a pair of chair members indicated generally at 14- and 15 respectively and shaped on their inner faces to fit snugly upon the tread of the rail and against the web thereof, these chair members overlapping the rail ends, as will. be understood, and presenting base flanges 14' and 15which extend under the rail and vertical fish-plate elements 1a and i 15 which engage the web of the rail.
Formed on the inner face of the element 14 is a longitudinal groove 16 which is covered by a face plate 17v secured in place by screws 18. In this groove 16 are mounted Specification of Letters iatent. Patented Aug, 165, 1921.
1921. Seriel no 47e,6s4.
a pair of bars 19 which extend along the groove and are adapted for vertical movement toward and away from one another. These bars are pressed toward one another by pairs of flat springs 20 carried in grooves and liked at one end to theplate element 14 and hearing at their. opposite ends against the bars. These bars serve to hold the fastening bolts against displacement.
bars 19 are of a shape to engage in said notches and so prevent withdrawal of the bolts.
the bolts 22 are adapted to remain permanently therein, being held against displace ment by meansof pins such as 24 carried in vertical sockets 25 intersecting the bolts 22 V and pressed upwardly into suitable notches in the latter by springs such as 26.
To reiease the bolts 22 from the bars 19, and thus permit of the chair membersbeing separated, the bars are adapted to be moved The boltsv j These fastening bolts are indicated at 22 apart by a lrey 28 whose head is inthe form of a cross 29 and which is inserted in a keyhole slot 30in the outer face of the member ltand into therecess 16; and between the 2 bars 19. If desired I mayprovidea pair of these slots 30, one adjacent each end of the member 14:, and employ a separate key in each slot.
The chair members 1 1, 15 may be secured to the tie l2'by means of spikes 32-of ordinary construction, the tie preferably being i ends on opposite sides thereof, bolts passing through one of said members and through the rails, and means confined within the othermember for'releasably holding said bolts, said means including spring pressed elements located on opposite sides of the bolts.
2. A rail fastening device comprising a pair of members adapted to engage the rail ends on opposite sides thereof, bolts assing through one of said members and t rough the rails, and means confined Within the other member for releasably holding said bolts, the bolts havingnotches formed on opposite sides thereof to receive said spring pressed elements.
3. A rail fastening device comprising a pair of members adapted to engage the rail ends on opposite sides thereof bolts passing through one of said members and through the rails, and means confined Within the other member for releasably holding said bolts, and spring pressed bars carried by the first of said members and engaging said bolts to prevent their Withdrawal from the said members. i
4. A rail fastening device comprising a pair of members adapted to engage the rail ends on opposite sides thereof, one of said members presenting an interior recess, eX-.
tending substantially the length thereof, bolts passing through the other member and through the'railsand into said recess, the
bolts being notched on opposite sides at the points Where they are Within said recess;
