a citizen of the United States, and residing at Kewanee, in the county of Henry and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stock-lltaterers, of which the following is 'aspecification.
The present invention aims to improve the I construction of stock or hog waterers,'and
more especially those ofthe-type in which the water may beheated. 'The general purposeof the invention is the provision'of an appliance or" this generic style whichis of" such structure that it can be manufactured at relatively small cost, that its parts may ,be
I readily separated, and that the heat applied to thewater supply may be easily and comparatively uniformly distributed'to it and also transmitted to the water in the trough." Thus, a neat finish is secured around the opening 43 and the'heated air of the housing is prevented from escaping around the trough, it being understood that there is adequate space between the casing and tank at all points to permit eflicient heating of the tank and trough and their contents by-the circulation of the heated air.
It may be noted that the stem or connec- .tion of the air-vent cook or valve 20 is lo cated outside of the outer casing or housing and is hence readily accessible for manipulation or operation, the top curved wall ofthe housing being cut away to permit the extension of the stem or pipe connection therethrough.
The appliance is also equipped or supplied with a removable funnel 50 having a spout 51 projecting down through a hole 52 in the casing and into the filling pipe or tube 21. Thus this funnel and its neck by closing the aperture 52 prevent the escape of the heated air from the casing; I
The method of operation and refilling such appliances and the principles employed are so well known that they do not require explanation, but it is to be observed, that the water-supply tank is horizontally disposed,
hence giving the apparatus a desirable low Thus the trough is automatically re-' center of gravity, that the trough is inside of the tank at one end, its contents thus being subject to the transfer of heat thereto from the water ofthe tank, "and that the semi-circular wall; of the trough is not only well adapted to withstand the water pressure in the tank exerted agalnst lt but its curved surface alsov facilitates the' fiow 'of heated water currents aroundthe troughthus aiding in keeping the'contents of the latter, although exposed to the outer cold air, sufficiently warm to prevent freezing even inthe coldest weather.
I When required the outer casing may be readily removed or lifted off 'by first bending the flanges 44 and 45 to permit such separation ofthe parts, whereuponthecasing may be easily releasedfrom the hook- shaped flange 25 and 26, permittingit to be elevated away from thetank and its supporting'v framework.
This inventionis not limited and restrictedto any particular embodlment since 1t is susceptible of being ncorporated in appl I ances of radially different physical characterlstics and accordlngly many inlnor changes maybe made in the structure presented without departure from the fundamental principles underlying the invention and still fall within the scope and breadth of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a stock watering-appliance of the character described, the combination ofa cyl ndrical water-supply tank, means to support said-tank w1th its axis substantially horizontaha head of said tank having an opening, anda trough inside ofsaid; tank and 1n communlcation w1th the water-sup ply thereofto whichtrough theanimalhas access through sald opening, said trough having a substantially semi-circular apertured side-wall, the edge portions of which extend through said headopening and are bent over to formfianges outside of and securedto the head, a bottom wall above the bottom ofthe tank, and a top wall hav ing an edge portion extended through said head opening and bent over to form a flange outside of and secured to saidhead,
substantially as described,
2. In aistock-wat'ering appliance of the character described, the combination of a skeleton frame having a. top opening, a cylindrical water-supply tank supported with its axis substantially-horizontal by resting on the longitudinal bars of the frame bordering said'top opening with the lower part of the tank projectlng downwardly into said frame opening, said tank being unattached to sald frame, a head of said tank vi g ning, and a trough inside of said tank and in communication with the water-supply thereof to which trough the animal has access through saidhead open:
ing, the front wall of said trough being formed by said tank head, said tank head also having an outwardly extended lip at the bottom margin of said head opening overlying a cross-bar of said frame, substantially as described.
3. In a stock-watering appliance of the character described, the combination of a skeleton frame having a top opening, a cylindrical water-supply tank supported with its axis substantially-horizontal by its curved cylindrical wall resting on the longitudinal bars of" the frame bordering said with the aperture of said head, said com bined tank and trough having a lip along the lower margin of said head apertureprojecting through and overlying the bottom margin of said casing aperture, substantially as described.
4. In a stock-watering appliance of the character described, the combination of a skeleton frame having a top opening, a cylindrical water-supply tank supported with its axis substantially-horizontal by its,
curved cylindrical wall resting on the longitudinal bars of the frame bordering said top; opening with the lower part of the tank projecting downwardly into said opening, said; tank being unattached to said frame, a head of said tank having an aperture,'a troughinside-said tank and in communication with thewater-supply thereof, to, which trough thefanimal has access through said head aperture, a casing housing said frame e and tank and apertured in register with the aperture of said head, said combined tank and trough having a lip along the lower margin of said head aperture projecting through and overlying the bottom margin of said casing aperture and also overlying a cross bar of said frame, said lip having a'downturned flange overlapping the outer face of said casing, substantially as described. f
5. In a stock-watering appliance of the character described, the combination of a cylindrical water-supply tank, a frame sup-,
