To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, MORRIS Gnnnnno, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of 'Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, ALEXANDER HIRsH and Mironnn MORGAN, both Russian subjects, and residing in the borough of Bronx, city and State of New York, county of Bronx, have invented new and useful Improvements in Automatons, of which the following isa specification.
This invention has as one of its objects the provision of a hollow doll body comprised of relatively thin sheet metal, formed by press methods into shape, together with the upper and lower limbs, which are attached in a novel and practical manner permitting them to turn freely with respect to the body, and also to move limitedly in a lateral direction, allowing the doll to assume positions simulative of the human body.
A. further object is to provide a pair of eyes with means for causing a rolling ac= tion, simulative of opening or closing, according to the posture of the doll head in which they are removably engaged.
These objects are attained by the novel construction and assembly of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a doll made in accordance withthe invention, showing one of the lower limbs attached.
Fig.2 is a fragmentary side elevational view showing the lower part of the body and limb attaching seat.
-Fig. 3 is a fragmentary side view of one of the lower limbs, looking from the inner side, and showing the engaging means.
Fig. 4 ,is a fragmentary transverse sectional view taken on line tt of Fig. 3.
Figs. 5, 6 and 7 are sectional views each being taken substantially on line 77 of Fig. 1, showing the connecting means used between the limb and body in various positions.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the numeral 15 indicates the front portion of the doll body and 16 the rear, the same be- 7 ing joined along their closely fitted side edges by solder or like securing means.

exceptat' two points, near the top on opposite sides, where the sheet metalis formed to present fiat surfaced annular plates or seats '17 representing the shoulders.
At the lower portion of'the body similar but slightly larger seats 18 are provided, at points representing the hips, for the lower limbs, these seats being inclined downwardly and also convergingly inclined toward the front as bestshown in Fig. 1.
Centralcircular openings 19 and 20tare formed through these seats and extending radially from the openings are slits 22, terminating at about one half the distance between the edges of the openings and peripheries-ofthe annular seats, the material on one side of the slits being pressed inward forming angular inclines 24:.
The limbs, both arms and legs 26, are also made of metal, in conventional shape and have at their upper ends, on theirv inner sides, flat annular plates 28 corresponding to the seats 17 and 18.
These plates contain central circular openings 30 in which are engaged the members used in connecting the limbs to the body.
These members are comprised of gromet or washer-like elements 35 disposed on the inner side of the plates, similar elements 36 extending over their outer sides, these elements being integrally connected by sleeves 37 passing through the openings 30 and maintaining the parts in proper relation.
The outer elements 36 are slit diagonally at one point from the sleeve outward to their peripheries and the material on one side of theslit is'pressed out, forming raised tongues 38 in such manner as toengage the inclines 24, passing below the seats 17 and 18the operation of assemblying being similar to entering a screw into a nut, as clearly illustrated in Figs. 5, 6 and 7, which show successive stages in connecting the parts and holding them in close relation to the plates 28, thereby locking the limbs to the body but permitting them to turn relatively, the
sleeves 37 acting as the axis of rotation.
The locking devices, comprised of the washers and their connections, being made of spring material, as thin sheet steel, also permit the limbs to be moved outward from the body to a limited amount, and return them to place when they become free, and
it will be clear that the limbs can be freely rotated on a horizontal plane at any time, the spring effect of the washers being sufiicient to maintain them in any adjusted position.
Should an injury occur to any of the limbs, it may be replaced in a clearly apparent manner.
Having thus described our invention and set forth the manner of its construction and operation, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is z- 1. In a doll of the class described, the combination with a hollow metallic body and pairs of upper and lower limbs, of pairs of seats formed, on opposite sides of said body, said seats containing central openings, cooperative seats formed with each of said limbs, spring plate washers secured to the seats of said limbs, said washers being slit tangentially; and means formed in the seats of said body receptive of said washers whereby said limbs are pivotally engaged and prevented from separating.
2. In a doll of the class described, the combination with a hollow metallic body and limbs engageable therewith, of annular seats formed on said body receptive of said limbs, said seats containing central circular openings and single slits extending therefrom, corresponding seats formed at the ends of said limbs, said seats also containing central circular openings, a washer dis posed at the back of the limb seats, 'asecond washer engageable through the mentioned slits with the rear of said body seats and a,
tang adjacent said slot, members having openings adapted to register with the openings in the body portion, a flanged member adapted to be seated in one of said opposing openings and having its flanges extending on the opposite sides thereof, one of the flanges of said members having a slot in its periphery and a tang adjacent said slot and being spaced from the edge of the opening in which it is seated to receive in said space the edge of the opening in the opposing member to hold said member in rotative relation therewith.
