Description
L. GATES.
Portable Fences. N0. 138,747. PatentedMay 13,1873.
M JESSE-.5 I I] I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEWIS GATES, OF MOUNT VERNON, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE FENCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,747, dated May 13, 1873 application filed January 13, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEWIS GATES, of Mount Vernon, in the county of Knox and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fences; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, that will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon which form a part of this specification.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a view of the fence, showing one panel; and Fig. 2, an end View of the same.
The nature of my invention relates to portable fences, and is intended to do away in a great measure with the pernicious effects of decay, which always takes place in those portions of a fence which are set into the ground. My invention consists as follows: The fence is constructed in sections or panels, as shown in Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawing.
The posts A, to which the boards B are attached, are inclined at an angle from the perpendicular, and supported in this position by the brace O, which is inclined at a corresponding opposite angle. The post A and brace O are prevented from spreading by the horizontal brace D. The pieces A O D intersect each other in such a way as to form a triangle, and permit both extremities of each piece to project beyond the points of intersection.
The object of this peculiar arrangement will now appear: When the fence is first set, as shown in the drawing, the extremities c and a are sunken in the earth until the horizontal piece D nearly comes in contact with the ground. In this position the fence remains Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The fence-post, consisting of the pieces A D 0, so arranged that the extremities of each will project beyond their points of intersection and permit the reversal of the panel, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth and shown.
J In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand.
LEWIS GATES.
