Description

A. H. GALKINS.
Washing-Machines.
Patented May 13, 1873.
' /mnfw A/LPHoro-LmmaRAPH/cca Mxgfossonue macsss) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALMON H. OALKINS, OF CHESTERTON, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.'
Specification forming part of Letters'Patent No. 138,734, dated May 13, 1873 application filed October 21, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALMON H. GALKINS, of Chesterton, in the county of Porter and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines, of which the following isa full, clear, and exact description, which will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention -appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing formlployed in connection with a jacket of small yielding rollers. Heretofore the small rollers have been supported by yielding end pieces; and Vthe object of my invention is to dispense with the employment of these end pieces, and otherwise simplify and improve the construction and operation of machines of this class. To that end my invention consists in making the large roller vertically yielding, and in arranging the spindles of the small rollers in radial slots or channels cut in rigid end pieces. It also consists in certain other novel features relating to the construction of the machine, all of which I will hereinafter more fully describe and set forth.
In the drawing, A A represent the rigid end pieces. a is a vertical slot or channel in the pieces A A. B is the large roller, and has its bearings in the slots a. C is a spiral spring,
arranged in the slots a, and resting on the 'are radial slots or channels in the pieces A A,
into which slots 'the spindles of the rollers E E project. v
In practice, I deem it preferable to Vary the lengthand position of the slots a c', as shown in Fig. 3. The spring F may also be fixed at or near the central roller E, and terminate at the terminal rollers, in which case the bar D may be dispensed with. Y
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In combination, the rigid pieces A, provided with the vertical slot a and the radial slots a', the vertically-yieldin g roller B having its spindle arranged in the slots a, and the yielding rollers E having their spindles arranged in the radial slots a', substantially as and for the purposes specied.
2. In combination, the rigid pieces A, pro vided with the vertical slot a and the radial slots a', the'roller B having its spindle arranged in the slots a, the springs C, also arranged in the slots a, and pressing the spindle of the roller B, the rollers E having their spindles arranged in the radial slots a', the spring F arranged across the spindles of the rollers E, and the sliding bar D, arranged on the springs C, and supporting the spring F, substantially as and forthe purposes specified.
