To all whom it may con cern Be it known that I, EDWARD M. HEYLMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of South Bend, in the county of St. Joseph have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a. full, clear, and exact description of the invention, suchfas will enable others skilled in the art'to which it. appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in plows and 'more particularly to lifting means for the vention being to provide simple and eflicient means cooperable with the mounting of the rear furrow wheel and operable by power from another wheel of the plow and located at the rear end of the plow beam or frame to control the raising and lowering of the.
soil-engaging devices.
A further object is to provlde simple and efli'cient means in power mechanism for locking parts of' such mechanism in such manner that the plow will be locked either in a raised position, or locked down to its working'position whereby the weight ofthe wheels will be brought to bear on the plo-w bases when in a working position to keep them at work in hard ground at a uniform depth.
A further object is to improve the construction of power lift mechanism and enhance the efficiency of the same in various respects. p I lVith this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims. i

The frame of the plow structure comprises a beam 1 and a forward cross bar 2 with which latter the beam 1 is connected b means of a bracket or connector 3. The beam has secured thereto a plurality of brackets or standards 4 on which soil-engaging devices 5 are mounted. In the drawing I have illustrated the soil-engaging devices in the form of disks but it is evident that plow bases of the mold-board and share type might be employed.

A frame 15 is securely bolted to the rear end of the beam 1 and is made with tubular portions 16, 17 which provide bearings, respectively, for a crank shaft 18 and the axle 19 of a land wheel 20. The axle 19 is formed with a crank 21 on which the hub of the land wheel is mounted and said hub is provided with a sprocket wheel 22 from which motion is transmitted by a drive :chain 23 to a sprocket wheel 24 mounted on the 14 at one end of the axle 19. the crank shaft 18. Clutch mechanism 25 is located between the pinion 25 and the. sprocket wheel 24, and controlled by a cord 26 connected with a trip lever 27.
The rear end of the plow structure is sup ported at the furrow side thereof, by a rear ing this wheel and operating it to provide rear wheel lifting means for the plow will now be explained.
A bracket 29 is securely bolted to the rear standard bracket 4 of the plow frame and projects rearwardly therefrom. The
.-bracket 29 is provided with rearwardly projecting lugs or ears 30 spaced apart for the accommodation of an axle bracket 31, the latter being pivotally connected with said lugs or ears by a suitable pin 32 and said bracket 31 is formed with a tubular portion which receives the upper part of the axle 33 of the rear furrow wheel 28. The axle bracket 31 is made with -a flanged arnr 31 whichjreceives'the inclined portion of the standard axle 33. and permits'a limited pivotal movement of said axle. The bracket 29' is made with a transverse tubular portion 34 which constitutes a bearing for a shaft 35.
. This shaft is provided at one end with a crank arm 36, with which the upper end of a link 37 is pivotally connected, the, lower end of said link being pivotally attached to an arm 38 projecting forwardly from the lower portion of the axle bracket 31. To

The arm 39 is provided at or near its upper end with a transverse hole in which the shank 40 of an internally threaded sleeve 41 is loosely mounted, said sleeve being disposed at right angles to the shank 40. These devices afford an adjustable and pivotal connection of a rod'42 with the arm 39, said rod having a threaded portion passing through the sleeve 41. The other end of the rod 42 ispivotally connected with an actuis connected with the crank of the shaft 18 of the power mechanism. Several holes 42 may be provided in the actuating bar 43 whereby the rod 42 may be 'adjustably attached thereto, so that the rear disk arms can be adjusted on the main beam-for changing the width of cut of each disk from 8, 9 and 10 inches. By means ofthe lever 51, the crank axle 19 of the land wheel may be-operated to effect] leveling of the rear end 'of'the plow struc.- ture, while the front portion .ofthe latter may be leveled by manipulation of 'the lever 12.
When it is desired to raise'the plow, the operatorwill manipulate the cord 26 to throw the power mechanism into action, so that motion shall be transmitted from the hub of the land wheel 2 to the crank shaft 18. The turning of this crank shaft will cause the actuating bar 43 to move for- I wardly and this will cause a forwardmovebe im-- sl1aft 35. As the latter shaft turns, motion will be. imparted by thelink 37 to the arm 38 of the axle bracket 31, thus causing the latter to be moved from the position shown' in Fig. 3 to the position shown in Fig. 2 and 100' the'plow' structure to be ralsed 9n the rear furrow wheel 28.
When the actuating bar 43 is moved forwardly as above described, the supporting link 49, with which the forward end ofsaid 11a bar-is connected (through the medium of-the segment bracket 48) will be moved forwardly, thus causing the. crank shaft 6. to turn and impart a lifting action to the forward end of the plow frame, through the 129 medium of the connections between said crank shaft 6 and the standard axle'9 of I" the front furrow wheel 10.
The forward movement, of the actuating bar-43 and arm 49, will also cause a forward ,movement of the segment bracket 48 and the hand lever 51 which is locked to the segment by its 'detent. As the lever thus moves forwardly, motion will beimparted, throu h the arm 52 and rod 53 to the arm 54 on t e larger gear 26 and consequently a one-half rotation of the crank shaft 18. It will be observed that the actuating bar 43 will normally bear a dead-center relation to the axis of the crank shaft 18 and the forward connection of the actuating bar, when the'plow is in working position, as shown in Figs. '1'
and 3, and that when the shaft 18 shall have been'turned a one-half rotation during the lifting operation, the actuating bar will have again assumed a dead center relation to the axis of .the crank shaft 18 as shown in Fig. 2-and it will thus be seen that a dead-center lock is provided for the plow when the latter is in either its working or in its raised position. In order that the gearing shall be held in position at each half rotation of the shaft 18 and thus insure the maintenance of the dead-center relation of the actuating bar to the axis of the shaft 18-when the plow is in either working or raised position, a locking lever 57 is provided. This lever is pivoted at 58 and is provided with a V- shaped or cam notch '59 for engagement with one or another of two pins 60 (having rollers 61 thereon) located at diametrically opposite points on the gear 26, proper engagement of the locking other of said ins bein insured by the action of asprlng 62. hisspring is attached atone end to the locking lever and its other end may be attached to the trip lever 27.
It is apparent that when it is desired to lower the plow, the trip lever 27' may. be operated to cause the gear 26 to overcome the locking means and permit the plow to descend to and become locked in working position.
Various slight changes might be made in the details of construction of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof or limiting its scope and hence I do not wish to restrict myself to the precise details here.- in set forth.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters-Patent, is
1. In a plow structure, the combination with a wheeled frame and a plow, of lifting means including a crank shaft and an actuated bar connected therewith and norlever with one or the' bears a dead center relation to the crank shaft, whereby the plow will be held either in a raised position or a working position.
2. The combination with a plow frame, a forward furrow wheel, raising means .movably connecting the frame with the axle of said wheel, a land wheel, a crank axle for the latter mounted at the rear end portion of the frame, an axle bracket pivotally connected with the rear end of the frame, a
rear-furrow wheel, and an axle for the latter having a part mounted in said pivoted axle bracket, of power mechanism on the rear portion of the frame, driving means for said power mechanism connected with the land wheel, an actuating bar connected with said power mechanism, connections between said actuating bar and there'ar axle bracket for raising the rear end of the frame, connections between said actuating bar and the raising means associated with the front furrow wheel, and connectionsbetween said last-mentioned connections and the crank axle of the land wheel for turning said crank axle when the actuating bar is moved.
3. The combination with a' plow frame, a forward furrow wheel, an axle therefor, a rear furrow wheel, an vaxle therefor, a bracket pivotally connected with the rear end of the frame and affording a bearing for the axle of the rear furrow wheel, a crank axle mounted at the rear endof the frame, and a land wheel having its hub mounted on said crank axle, of power mecha-' nism mountedat the rear end of the frame, driving means between said power mechanism and the hub of the land wheel, and lifting connections between mechanism and the axles of the wheel and the land wheel, and operating means connecting said lifting connections with the pivoted axle bracket of the rear furrow wheel axle.
4. The combination with a plow frame, a front furrow wheel, a standard axle therefor, a crank shaft mounted-at the forward end of the frame, a land wheel, a crank axle therefor mounted at the rear portion of the frame, an axle bracket pivotally connected with the rear end of the frame, a rear furrow wheel, and an axle therefor having a part mounted in said axle bracket, of power mechanism atthe rear portion of the frame'and operatively'associated with the land wheel, said power mechanism including a crank shaft, an actuating bar connecting said lastmentioned crank shaft with the forward crank shaft, connections between said actuating bar and the land-wheel crank axle, and connections between said actuating bar and the pivoted axle-bracket of the rear furrow wheel axle.
5. The combination with a plow frame, a front furrow wheel, a standard axle therefor, a land wheel, a crank axle therefor, an
