LIFTING MECHANISM FOR POWER-LIFT FLOWS.
Application filed December 8, 1920. Serial No. 429,220.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID A. BIEBINGER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Janesville, county of Rock, and State of \Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifting Mechanism for Power-Lift Plows, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which the invention relates to make and use the same, reference being madetherein to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to plows of the wheel supported gang type designed to be hauled by a tractor or equivalent hauling agency; and particularly to plows of the above type which are selfzlifting, and wherein means are provided for raising the frame and furrow turning elements by power derived from the hauling device whereby the plow is drawn at the ends of the furrows, and when the plow is to be turned about.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a self-lifting or power lift plow of the general type above referred to and in which the mechanism whereby the main frame which supports the plowing elements is lifted is carried by an auxiliary or sup- ,30 plemental frame secured to the main frame,
so that the lifting mechanism comprises a separate device complete in itself and the parts of which may be assembled relative to the supplemental frame; the supplemental frame being carried by the main frame or supporting bar of the plow and the same together with the lifting mechanism comprising a single unitary structure complete in itself and capable of being attached thereto after the plow has been properly assembled.
A further object of my invention is to provide improved lifting mechanism for use with and as a part of a self-lifting or power lift plow, the same being complete in itself and capable of use with plows varying one from another to a considerable extent; so that a single power lift mechanism may be used with various particular. kinds, sizes or types of plow.
A further object of my invention is to provide various improvements in and relatvention in view, my invention consists in the improved lifting mechanism for power lift plows illustrated in the accompanying drawings and hereinafter described and claimed; and in such variations and modifications thereof, within the scope of the concluding claims, as will be obvious to those skilled in the art to which my invention relates.
Referring now to the drawings wherein the preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated:

Figure 2 is a view of the-plow in side elevation and as seen from a position at the left hand side thereof, the parts being shown in the position which they assume when the plow bottoms or furrow turning elements are in their lowermost position.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view showing certain elements and features of the front end of the plow to which my invention is applied as seen from a position at the righthand side of the plow.
Figure 4 is a view upon a larger scale showing my improved lifting mechanism in plan and separate from the other elements and features of the plow.
In the drawings, the reference numeral 10 desi ates the main frame member or supporting bar of the plow,'the same extending longitudinally from the. front to the rear end thereof and being arranged diagonally relative to the direction of travel of the plow, and serving as a support for a plu-' rality of furrow turning elements shown as discs 11 supported from said bar and disposed one in front of the other; said discs being supported from the frame'member or beam 10 through suitable brackets 12 secured to said beam and from the lower ends .of' which the said discs are suitably supported so as to rotate freely when the plow is in use. It will be appreciated, however,
that my invention is in no way limited to a plow having any particular character of furrow turning elements; and that plow bottoms of the mold board and share type may if desired, be secured to and carried by the mlain supporting bar 10 or frame of the Said frame member 10 is shown as bent at an acute angle adjacent its front end to provide a transversely extending portion 13, and a transversely extending draft member or frame 14, is secured to the front end of the frame in any suitable way as by securing the ends thereof adjacent the ends of the transversely extending portion 13; and the inner ends of said transversely extending portion and of the draft frame are shown as braced by a rearwardly extending brace bar 15 the front end of which is secured to said draft frame and to said transversely extending portion, and the rear end of which 'is secured in a fixed position relative to the frame bar 10 in any suitable way. The rear end of a draw bar 16 whereby the plow is drawn is adjustably secured along the draft frame 14 so that tractive effort exerted by a tractor or similar hauling agency is communicated to the frame of the plow through the draft frame, the transversely extending portion 13, and the brace member 15 in the plow to which my invention is shown applied. The details of the draft frame, however, form no part of the invention to which this present application relates; the same and various other features of the plow device illustrated but not claimed in this application being described more in detail and forming a part of the subject matter of an application for patent filed by Alvaro S. Krotz on the 8th day of December, 1920, Serial No. 429,205.
The reference numerals 17 and 18 designate two vertically arranged furrow wheel supporting shafts the lower ends of which are bent to pnovide axles upon which the rear and front furrow wheels 19, 20 of the plow are rotatable; and the reference numerals 21, 22 designate brackets secured one at the rear and the other at the front of the frame of the plow and whih brackets are provided with vertically extending bearings slidable upon the shafts 17, 18 as the plow frame and plow bottoms carried thereare moved upward and downward through the lifting mechanism to be hereinafter described. The said front and rear furrow wheels are angularly movable about the axes of the shafts whereby they are supported through and by C means of link mechanism comprising a link member 23 connected with the draw bar 16 and with an arm 24 which is carried by the front furrow wheel shaft, arms 25 and 26 secured respectively adjacent the upper ends of the front and rear furrow wheel shafts, and a link 27 connected with the extremities of said arm; so that as the draw bar swings from side to side angular movement in opposite directions is communicated to said front and rear wheel furrow shafts.
The reference numeral 28 designates a transversely extending oscillating shaft located at the front end of the frame and supported in suitable bearings carried thereby and the right hand end of which provided with a crank arm 29 the free end of which is pivotally connected with an adjustable link member comprising a threaded crank 30 and a stirrup 31; the up per end of the crank, as best shown in Figure 3, being rotatably supported from the upper end of the front furrow wheel sup-- porting shaft 18 through and by means of a suitable abutment 32. The inner or right hand end of this shaft 28 is provided with an upwardly extending arm 33; and the reference numeral 34 designates a link ex tending rearward from the upper end of said arm and the rear end of which is pivotally connected with the free upper end of an arm 35 which is carried by and moves with an oscillating lifting shaft 36 extending transverse to the plow. The outer or left hand end of this oscillating shaft is bent so as to provide a forwardly and downwardly extending arm 37, and bent again adjacent thelower end of said arm to provide an axle 38 upon which a land wheel 39 is rotatable and which land wheel operates to lift the plow frame and plow bottom carried thereby at the will of the operator.
The oscillating lifting shaft 36 is provided with an arm 40 with which the forward end of a rearwardly extending link 41 is pivotally connected and the rear end of said link is likewise connected with one arm 42 of a bell crank lever, which is pivotally supported at 43 by an arm 56 extending from the'bracket 21 hereinbefore mentioned; while the other arm 44 of said lever is supported from an abutment 45 fast upon the upper end of the rear furrow wheel shaft 17 through and by means of an adjustable supporting rod 46. It follows from the above that the plow frame and plow bottoms carried thereby are supported from the upper ends of the front and rear furrow wheel shafts by the abutments 32, 45 and through and by means of the link mechanism above described, as distinguished from supported upon collars upon the front and rear furrow wheel shafts as has heretofore commonly been the case; the arm 40 and link 41 being in line and the arms 33 and 35 acting in opposition to one another through the link 34 when the plpw bottoms are in their lowermost positions.
The mechanism for lifting the frame in its entirety and the furrow turning elements carried thereby comprises a clutch drum 47 -supplemental frame whereb secured to and rotating with the land wheel 39, a clutch plate 48 loose upon a land wheel axle 38 and disposed adjacent said clutch drum, and clutch mechanism controlled by a lever 49 which is pivotally su ported at the free end of an arm 50 carried by the oscillating lifting shaft 36 and is operable by a rope extending to the tractor; andwhich clutch mechanism is adapted to secure the lock-ing of the clutch plate and clutch drum together and the driving of the plate from the drum and land wheel throughout successive half rotations of said wheel, and the locking of the plate in fixed positions at the ends of its movements to thereby positively hold the frame in both its uppermost and lowermost position; such clutch mechanism, however, not being shown in detail as the same may be of various forms such for example, as of the form shown in either of two applications for patent filed by Alvaro S. Krotz on the 8th day of December, 1920, Serial No. 429,203 and Serial No. 429,204.
Located adjacent the middle portion of the main supporting frame bar 10 and extending laterally therefrom is a triangularly shaped bracket 51 whereby the lifting mechanism for the frame of the plow is carried; and the reference numeral 52 designates an auxiliary or supplemental frame supportedby said bracket and whereby the "entire lifting mechanism of the plow is carried, the said lifting mechanism bein assembled with said frame as a single unitary structure and capable of being attached to plows after they have been assembled, and
to plows differing in size, form, or otherwise to a considerable extent one from another. This supplemental frame is provided with oppositely disposed forwardly extending arms 53, 54, which arms support depending brackets 65, 66 havin bearings which support the oscillating li ing shaft 36; the supplemental frame as a whole be-' ing shown as supported from the bracket 51 through a saddle blade 67, and fastening bolts 68. One of the brackets whereby the lifting shaft 36 is supported is preferably made adjustable relative to the arm of the it is carried; the outer bracket being t e one which is shown adjustable in the embodiment of my invention illustrated and such adjustment being effected through and by means of an adjustable eye bolt 69 the forward end of which is threaded and extends throu ha hole in an outwardly bent lug 70 o the outer arm 53 by means of suitable nuts 71, while the rear end or eye of said bolt is secured to the bracket in question by means of I a stud bolt 72. It therefore follows that upon loosening the bolts 73 whereby the bracket 65 is secured to the arm 53 the outer end of the lifting shaft 36 may be moved forward or backward and the land or lifting wheel 39 caused to run properly along the unplowed ground at the side of the furrows. The clutch plate 48 is provided with a crank pin 74, and 75 designates a lifting link the lower end of which is pivotally connected with said crank pin and the upper end of which is similarly connected with the free forward end of an arm 76 of a bell crank lever which is pivotally supported at 77 from the inner forwardly extending arm 54 of the supplemental frame 52 by a securing bolt which extends through both the said arm and the bracket 66 carried thereby in the form of my invention illustrated. The
upwardly extending arm 78 of the bell crank lever above referred to is held in fixed posi tion by the threaded shank 79 of a crank 80 the forward end of which is rotatable in a suitable bearin 57 sup orted from the draft frame 14; sai threaded shank extending through a swivel nut 81 carried by the upper end of the arm 78 above referred to. The
purpose of this crank 80 is to adjust the extent of upward movement imparted to the plow frame during the lifting operation,
while the crank 30 serves as a means for leveling the several plow bottoms to thereb secure a uniform depth of furrows turne by the plow when in operation.
In view of the premises itwill be apprethus assembled may then be attached as a unit to the plow by securing the same to the laterally extending bracket 51 which forms a part of the frame of the plow, thus pro viding a scheme whereby plows completely assembled except as to the lifting mechanism may be equipped with a lifting mechanism complete in itself and separately assembled;
and that such liftin mechanism may be applied to plows di ering to a considerable extent in size, form, type or otherwise one from another as regards to details thereof.
The liftin mechanism in its entirety may obviously e assembled in one place and the plow in another, thus facilitating the manufacture and assembly of the plow regarded in its entirety and the shipment of the same to the point where it is to be used.
Having thus described and explained my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a plow of the class described, a longitudinally extending and vertically movable main frame adapted to support one or more furrow turning elements; a supplemental frame carried bysaid main frame and located adjacent the central portion thereof; an oscillating lifting shaft carried by said supplemental frame and extending transverse to the plow and having a downwardly and forwardly extending arm, and a round wheel axle at its free end; a ground. wheel rotatable upon said axle; clutchmechsaid clutch mechanism and said main frame and through which the latter is lifted by power derived fromsai'd ground wheel; arms carried by said" lifting shaft and located one at each end thereof; and linkmechanism through which one of said arms is connected with the front and the other with the rear ends of said main frame. 7

In a plow of the class described, a. vertically movable main frame adapted to sup port one or more furrow turning elements; an auxiliary frame carried by said main frame; brackets carried by said auxiliary frame; an oscillating lifting shaft supported in bearings carried by said brackets; means for adjusting said brackets relative to one another; a ground wheel carried by said lifting shaft; clutch mechanism operated by said ground wheel; and means intermediate said clutch mechanism and said main frame and through which said main frame is lifted by power derived from said ground wheel.
