To all whom/ may concern:
' Be it known that I, OLIVIER IInrrn, of Brussels, Belgium, at rpresent carrying on business at Paris, France, subject of the King'of theBelgians, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horizontal CoklngeOvens, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to horiontal coking ovens with vertical Iiues and of theregenerative type arranged for heating with blast furnace or producer gas. In a certain class of ovens of the above type the checker work for one phase of the air preheating was situated in two arched chambers located under the ovens and to one side Vof the longitudinal battery center line and extending parallel vto same and connected in series with one another by ducts,
the area of which was increased in order to obtain a suitablev distribution of air to the retorts of the battery, in proportion to their-distances from the chimney, and the "l checker work forthe other phase was situated in two other arched chambers located on the opposite side of the battery center line and extending parallel to the same and connected in the same manner as the first mentioned pair-` Y The object of this invention is to provide meansA for operating regenerators, positioned as described above, in parallel instead of in series to enable both air and producergas or blast furnace gas to be preheated.
Another object of this invention is to provide means for heating Ovens with coke oven gas or producer' gas or blast furnace gas or any combination of the same.
The annexed drawings illustrate the construction embodying my invention.

In vthe f following description primed reference numbers 'are employed to designate similar members or structure to thosedesignated by the original numbers, but located pn the opposite side of the battery center In the oven walls adjacent to the oven l are located a/pluralityy of heating iiues 2 and 2 which communicate by means of gas ports 3 and 3 with aplurality of gas chambers -l and 4L located directly beneath them and into which coke oven' gas is introduced by pipes m and m provided with stop valves indicated by crosses on Fig. l. One-half of the chambers in each wall are fed with gas by means of pipes m and the other half by means of pipes m.
Heating flues 2 and 2 communicate by means of twyers 5 and 5 with sole flues located beneath the retorts which are divided transversely into halves 6 and 6 by means pf walls 8 situated on the battery center ine. v
Underneath the sole fines and extending at right angles to the same and parallel to the battery center line are located the regenerators a and a and b and b; alternate half sole flues 6 and 7 communicate with regenerators and a respectively, half soleA iues 6 communicating 'with regenerator b by means of flue 9 controlled by damper 10 and half soleflues Zwith regenerator a by means of flue 16 which is controlled by a damper not shown but similar to damper IO; half sole flues 6v and 7 are connected in a corresponding manner with regenerators Zi and a respectively.
The regenerators Z) and b and flues g and g are divided by walls ll and 1l in such a manner that each chamber so formed communicates only with one sole flue 6 and 6 and :dues al and al respectively.V In regenerators a and a the checker work only is divided by walls 12 and l2 leaving a flue under the Vcrown of the arch ef each chamber. Beneath the checker work'of the regenerators a and a are pairs of connecti ing arched flues c and c extending parallel to the battery center line and connecting with their respective regenerators a and a by means of ports f and f respectively which pierce the varched roof of saidfiues,

The cross sectional area of flues 7c and la is increased in proportion to their distances from the chimney whereby a suitable distribution of the air (or gas as will be explained later) is obtained. 1n the iues 7c and lo are placed valves or dampers z' and z respectively. Vhen heating with coke oven gas the device operates as follows:
y Assuming that combustion is to take place in the heating iiues kon the left hand sidel (see Fig. l) of the battery center line and coke oven gas to be used as the heating'med ium, reversing valve o being positioned as shown by solid lines in Fig. 4, air is admitted to fines-Z and c through air inlet 14 andr fluesv d Aand C are connectedto the chimney. Valves z' and dampers 8 and s are open and valves r are set for ther proper intensity ot draft, and gas reversing lcocks z. and h are closed, pipes m being open. and pipes m closed.

Preheated air from regenerator a enters sole flue 7 through ports 16, passing thence into the left hand group of combustion finesv 2- through twyers 5 positioned opposite to those opening from sole flue 6. Coke oven gas is admitted to gas vchambers 4 throughpipesm, from whence it issues through ports 3 into combustion 'flucs 2 Where it encounters the preheated air issuing fromV flues 6 and 7 through ports 5 and ignites.'L Rising through left hand flues 2 the products of combustion enter horizontal flue 15 and pass-to the right hand group of iues 2 in which they descend entering the sole fines 6 and 7 by means of twyers 5 passing thence into ktheir respective generators a and b. The products of combustiony entering the regenerator a give up a portion of their heat to the same and escape through ports 7 into flues #and thence into theV chimney. Similarly the products entering the chamber vescape by ues 7c and la. Flues o and c and l and d open'-V ney. Vhen regenerators a and b are heated suiiiciently the currents of air and gas are reversed as follows:
Reversing valve @is positioned at right angles to its previous position, that is, in the postion shown by dotted lines on Fig. 4.

Claims:
1. 1n a horizontal coking oven, in combination, a series of colring chambers, a series of combustion chambers, a l pair of@ regenerators disposed perpendicularly to said chambers, a series ot sole lues; extending'.l parallel to said chambersalternate ysoleflues being connected with the-same regenerator, a series. off gas; chambers, means vfonsupplyingl gasY to saidfgas chambers, eachl combusmeans of` fluesgQk andai into the chimtion chamber having connections -vvith two 13o adjacent sole flues and with a gas chamber, means for supplying gas to one of said regenerators and means for supplying air to both regenerators, whereby it is possible to supply the combustion chambers with a richer gas from the gas chambers, and with air from both regenerators, 0r to supply them with a poorer gas through one regenerator and with air through the other regenerator. v 2. In a horizontal coking oven, in combination, `a series of coking chambers, a series of combustion chambers, a pair of regenerators disposed perpendicularly to said chambers, a series of sole lues extending parallel to said chambers, alterna-te sole flues being connected with the same regenerator, a se ries of gas chambers, means for supplying gas to said gas chambers, each combustion chamber having connections with two adjacent sole fiues and with a gas chamber, the connection with the gas chamber being l0- cated between the connections with the sole ilues, means for supplying gas to one of said regenerators and means for supplying air to both regenerators, whereby it is possible t0 supply the combustion chambers with aV richer gas from the gas chambers, and with air from both regenerators, or to supply them with a poorer gas through one regenerator and with air through the other regenerator. i
