IMPROVEMENT IN SAUSAGE-STUFFERS.

Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,674, dated May 6, 1873; application iiled March 14, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK MICKELS, of Quincy, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sausage-Presses, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.

Nature and Objects of the Invention.

The invention relates to a press for filling the receptacle intended to contain sausagemeat; and consists of a barrel having a recess in its base connected with a spout, a standard being provided on each side of the cylinder and extending somewhat above the upper rim thereof, which standards support and sustain the pressing apparatus, consisting of a threaded piston having its lower extremity provided with a platen fitting the cylinder, audits upper passing through a female screw in a sleeve operated by a beveled spur-gear wheel, which engages a corresponding pinion, the latter being mounted upon a shaft supported in bearings and operated by a crank at its opposite end, so that, as the crank is turned, the platen is forced downward, expelling from the spout the contents of the barrel. The object of the invention is to provide a convenient means for stuffing sausage, or for other analogous purposes.

Description of the Accompanying Drawing.

Figure l is a vertical central longitudinal section of a device embodying the elements of the invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a top view of the brace Il.

General Description.

A in the accompanying drawing is a plate, to which `is properly secured the barrel B, having in its lower surface the recess G, connected with the spout D, which extends beyond the edge of theI plate A. Upon each side of the barrel B are provided the standards E, which rise above the upper edge of the cylinder a proper distance and have at their upper extremities the ears F furnished with the apertures e.. The brace H is snstained at each side by the pin I, or other suitable detachable connection, passing through the apertures z and a', respectively, in the standards and brace, the latter being provided at its center with an aperture, in which is inserted the sleeve L provided on its lower extremity with the collar w, and near its upper with the collar n, above which is placed the beveled spur-gear-wheel M. The sleeve L has a threaded center, in which works the piston N, threaded throughout its length and provided at its lower extremity with the platen O, tting snugly in the cylinder B, while its upper extremity is reduced to a shoulder and provided with the chock t. The wheel M engages a correspondingly-toothed pinion, P, secured at one end of a shaft, B, which works in the journal-box S and inbearings in the brace H, the former being properly connected with the brace and provided with an oiling-vent. The end of the shaft R is provided with a crank, T, by means of which the shaft is rotated.

Operation.

The crank T is operated until the platen O is in close relation to the brace H, when one of the pins I is drawn and thepressing apparatus thrown over, as on a hinge, thus opening the mouth of the barrel B, into which the sausage-meat is deposited. The pressing apparatus is now restored to its formerposition and the withdrawn pin replaced. The skin or `other material intended to receive the sausage-meat is now placed about the mouth of the spout D, and secured there. The crank T is next rotated in a direction opposite to that aforesaid, forcing down the platen O, thereby expelling the sausage-meat through the recess C into the spout D, and thus into the receptacle about its outer extremity.

It is obvious that the above-described device can be readily employed as a cheese,

cider, or vegetable press.
