THOMAS D. MCGUIRE, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN CIGAR-MoLDs.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,672, dated May 6, 1873; application led December 24, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THoMAs D. MCGUIRE, of Brooklyn, in the county of' Kings and State of New York, have invented a new `and useful Improvement in Cigar-Molds, of which the following is a specification:
This invention'relates to molds for pressing and drying cigar-bunches 5 and consists in making the chips which constitute the acting or pressing portions of the upper halt' of the mold in one and the same piece with each other and with the board or back on which they are arranged, said chips being cut or dressed out of the same piece with such back, which latter is strengthened and kept from warping by an outer back having its grain running transversely to that of the rst-named or inner back, and th at of the chips forming an integral portion of it. Heretofore it has been customary to make these chips, which enter Within the bunchfreceiving spaces of the lower half of the mold, separate from each other and from the back, and to attach the same to the latter by glue, sprigs, or otherwise, whereby said chips are very liable to become loosened by the moisture expelled from the cigar-bunches and from other causes.
In the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section of a cigar-mold when closed, having my improvement applied 5 Fig.
2, a transverse section of the same; and Fig. 3 a face view of the upper half of the mold.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the upper half of the mold, and B the lower half thereof, both made of wood, and of any desired length to comprise a given number of molding and pressing surfaces, said two halves of the mold bengdirected to their places relatively with each other, and so that the chips O of the upper half-mold enter the molding spaces or chambers b of the lower half-mold by means of dowels or guidepins d on the one half-mold entering holes c in the other half-mold. The lower half-mold B may be constructed in the usual manner 5 but the upper half-mold A has its chips O made in one piece with each other and witha back, f, on which they are arranged by cutting or dressing them out of the same piece with said back instead of attaching them separately thereto, and whereby the advantages hereinbefore specified are obtained. An outer back, y, having its grain running transversely to that of the inner back f and chips O, is secured to the inner back to keep the parts from warping and to stiften them.
What is here claimed, and desire-d to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
The mold having the chips O of its upper half A made of the same piece with each other and with the back f, substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
THOS. D. MCGUIBE.
