To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, GEORGES dnAN'rn'r,` a citizen of the French Republic, residing at Bilbao, in the Province of Vizcaya and Kingdom Spain, have invented certain new and Useful Improvements in Explosion- Motors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in internal combustion engines.
An important obj ect of the invention is to provide a novel form of pitman connection between the piston and the crank-shaft of the engine, so that a simplified piston may be employed having the ends thereof operating in the explosion and compression chambers.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.

In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a crank case, provided upon its opposite sides with openings 6, which lead into casings 7, rigidly attached to the crank case as shown. ,I
The casings 7 are arranged near the lower end or bottom of the crank case 5, and receive ballebearings 8, having the ends 9 of a crank shaft 10 j ournaled therein, as shown. This crank shaft embodies cranks 11, connected by pins 12.
The numeral 13 designates a pair of cylinders, of substantial length. These cylinders project downwardly into the crank case 5, and extend vertically therein. The
vcylinders 13 are preferably cast integral with a horizontal plate 14, disposed upon the top of the crank case, and bolted or otherwise rigidly secured thereto, as shown at 15.

The upper end 19 of the cylinder 13 functions as an explosion chamber, while the lower end 2O thereof serves as a compression. chamber. A tubular member 21 is connected with the explosion chamber 19, and is adapted for the reception of a spark. The lower end of the compression Vchamber 2O is internallyscrewthreaded to receive a portion of an externally screw threaded cap 23, whereby to vary the volume of the compression space at will.
Each compression chamber 20 is provided upon its side with a fuel inlet or opening 211, and a conduit 25 to supply the fuel or gas thereto. The compression chamber 20# is further provided, at or near its lower end with an outlet opening 26, leading into a passage or port 27, discharging into the lower end of the explosion chamber 19, through an opening 28. Disposed opposite the opening 28 is an exhaust conduit 29, leading into the lower end of the explosion chamber 19, and Vin horizontal alinement with the opening 28, as shown.
Mounted to reciprocate within the cylinder 13 is a cylindrical piston 30, having a slightly smaller diameter, with its ends operating within the chambers 19 and 20. At its ends, the double ended piston 30 has rings 31, extending radially beyond the same and of substantially the diameter of the bore of the cylinder 13, to lit snugly therein. Itis thus apparent that these rings or flanges slidably contact with the interior of the cylinder 13 while the piston 30 is spaced therefrom.
The piston 30 is provided at a point equidistantly spaced from the ends thereof with an annular groove 32, and a transverse opening 33. The transverse opening 33 receives a transverse pin 34, operating through elongated slots 35 formed in the intermediate portions of the cylinder 13. Pivotally connected with the ends of the transverse'pin 34 are pitmen 36, arranged exteriorly of the cylinder 13 and within the crank case 5. At their lower ends, the pitmen are preferably formed integral with a sleeve element 37, rigidly connected with a coacting sleeve element 38, by bolts 39. These sleeve elements pivotally receive the shaft 12. The pitmen 36 and sleeve 37 form a U-shaped member, as shown.
The operation of the apparatus is as follows VWhen each piston 30 descends, upon4 the explosion of the charge in the chamber'19, the same uncovers the exhaust port 29 and yinlet port28. The products of combustion are thereby exhausted to the atmosphere and the fresh charge fed into the chamber 19 through :the opening 28. The charge is compressed within theichamber 20, upon the down stroke Vof the piston, and drcwn into `the saine upon the upstroke. interiorly ofthe crank case.
