IMPROVEMENT IN JOURNAL'KBOX LININGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,646, dated May 6, 1873; app i Y January 29, 1873. l
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STUART GWYNN, of the city, county, .and State of N ew York, have invented a new manufacture, the same being an Improved Lining for J ournal-Boxes and other rubbing surfaces, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of the same.
0n the 12th day of April, 1870, certain Let ters Patent of the United States were issued to me numbered from 101,862 to 101,869 inclusive, for certain compositions of matter denominated meta1ine, and for the processor method of making the same, as also the offices it performs, to which reference is made. The invention herein intended to be described and `claimed relates to a special mode of applying 'and of a thickness of from one-sixteenth to oneeighth of an inch, or greater, if desired, a layer or stratum of metaline, or its equivalent, in a cation filed l powdered state, Upon this I uperimpose another sheet or strip ofthe wood and then again 'anotherl layer or stratum of m1 taline, containing the alternate layers of Wo `l and metaline, until the requisite thickness o the mass is obtained. I tnen subject the e ire mass to se- Vere pressure in any suitable l 1| anner, preferably between rollers, which pressure compresses and compacts the met ine into a solid form, and so incorporates it tlh the ber of the wood that the metaline i held in shape and position, and with the w d really forms one composition or substand and may be readily handled and cut into rips to be used in lining journal-boxes or fon ing other surfaces designed to be subjecte to friction, the metaline being a material wh` h, in its action as suchA surfaces, obviates t` e necessity of the use of oil or any other e1 traneous lubricator.
In applying it to use the str` is of the lining are placed, ofcourse, with th 1 edges or ends of the alternate layers of me` lline and wood faced upon the journals or ot r bearings.
