Description

S. GWYNN.
Journal Box L inings.
Patented May 6,18

AM. PHOTU'Z I THDGIMPH/C C0. N. 0550/ UNITED STATES? STUART GWYNN, or new YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO THE AMERIG METALINE COMPANY, or SAME rLAcE.
IMPROVEMENT IN JOURNAL-BOX LININGS.
January 29, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STUART GWYNN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new manufacture, the same being an Improved Lining for Journal-Boxes and other rubbing surfaces, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of the same.
011 the 12th day of April, 1870, certain Letters Patent of the United States were issued to me numbered from 101,862 to 101,869, in-
clusive, -for certain compositions of matter denominated metaline, and for the process or method of making the same, as also the offices it performs, to which reference is made.
The invention herein intended to be described and claimed relates to a special mode of applying the said several kinds of metaline, or any of them, or their equivalent, to practical use; and consists in a combination of metaline with the material, in the manner and for the purposes particularly described.
Figure l is a vertical sectional view of my invention, showing the first stage of its fabrication. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same after the same has been subjected to pressure, and thus completed and rendered ready'for use.
In fabricating my invention, I first take a strip or sheet of cloth of any suitable woven, knit, or felted fabric, of either vegetable or animal fiber, and spread upon the same a layer or stratum of finely-powdered metaline, or its equivalent. I then place upon this again another strip or sheet of the cloth or fabric, and then another layer or stratum of the metaline, and so on, continuing the alternate layers of metaline and of the fabric, until the desired are placed, of course, with the edges n amount of thickness of the mass is ob ined.
, I then subject the entire mass to sever ressure by suitably constructed rollers or p sses, which pressure compresses and compa s the metaline into a solid form, and so incor rates it in and with the meshes and fiber f the fabric that it really forms one composi on or substance, the fabric serving to hold t1 metaline in shape and position, so that it ay be readily handled and cut into strips, other desired forms, to be used in lining jj rnalboxes, or other surfaces designed to Q subjected to friction, the metaline being a material which, in its action as such surfac s, obviates the necessity of the use of oil other extraneous lubricator. j
In applying itto use the strips of th ining of the alternate layers of metahne andi abric faced upon the journals orother beari With some fabrics and for some pu oses, it is desirable to saturate or coat, or boy fabric with a preparation of parafii 3 caoutchouc, or other suitable coinpositi n, be-
fore spreading the metaline powder ov it.
In the drawing an enlarged or ma nified size of this lining is shown,'in order t t the invention may be more readily and c; nveniently perceived. 1 What I claim as a new manufacture j j The composition denominated metal corporated with any woven, knit, or fabric, of either vegetable or animal fr the manner and for the purposes speci Witnesses:
