Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 2, 1921.
Application filed November 28, 1919. Serial No. 341,211.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN K. GREEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, county, city, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brick- Anchored Bolts, set forth in the following specification.
This invention relates to the form of and to the anchorage to a building wall about a window opening of an anchor bolt of the type providing attachment for a window cleaners safety belt. The object of the invention is to improve the construction of such an anchor bolt and to combine it with a building wall in a manner forming a better and more secure and permanent anchorage. More specifically the object of the invention is to provide an anchor bolt of web-like body construction capable of location in an angularly disposed position in a horizontal plane in the parting between building blocks and so that it maintains an anchorage upon a plurality of tiers of such building blocks.
The above will better be understood by reference to the illustrative embodiment of my invention set forth in the following specification which is directed to the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof, and in which like characters designate corresponding parts in the figures.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a horizontal section of my construction with parts shown in plan; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the preferred form of my anchor bolt, and Fig. 3 is a vertical section, partly in elevation, taken back of the window frame A showing how the anchor involves at least three courses of brick.
A indicates in horizontal section the lateral upright of a window frame which is .shown to be of sheet metal construction but which forms no part of my invention. In completing a window opening, after the window frame A is set in position, the masonry is built up about it.
In my illustrative embodiment I have shown two tiers B and C of building blocks, specifically shown in the form of bricks which are built up about the window frame A. B is an outer tier and C is one of the inner tiers that shown being the nearest to the window frame A. The top blocks 1 and 2 of these tiers are shown in plan;
In Fig. 1, the top surfaces of these blocks are horizontal and in the same plane. The body portion D of my anchor bolt E lies fiat upon the top surfaces of blocks 1 and 2 in the space adapted to form the parting between these blocks 1 and 2 and the next superposed blocks. Objectively the body portion D extends diagonally inward and rearwardly from the wall face 3 at the window opening.
The anchor bolt E, preferably of cast bronze, comprises a head 4 providing a uni versal attachment for a belt clip. The head 4 is formed as a projection from wedge shaped parting bridge 5 which is adapted to span the parting between the block 1 and that upon it. Angularly positioned and extending in a plane at right angles to bridge 5, is a web-portion or body portion D which is inclined and curved at the portion 7 to overlap the corner 8 of block 1 and overlap a portion of block 2. A plurality of relatively right angularly positioned lateral projecting arms 9, 10, 11 extend out from the body portion into positions corresponding to the edges of the building block. They are provided with one or more lips 12 and 13. In the perspective view of Fig. 2 the anchor bolt is shown with two oppositely projecting lips, both 12 and 13, although either 12 or 18 by itself for each arm is contemplated.
As the tiers B and C are completed my anchor bolt is constrained to lock into at least four building blocks, the anchorage being solely upon the blocks and not against the window frame A,'or any attachment thereof. The mortar applied to the surface of blocks such as 1 and 2 serves also to anchor my bolt although the grip upon the building blocks alone is sufficient to provide a permanent secure anchorage.
What I claim and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. In a building construction in combination with a building wall forming a window opening and comprising an outer tier and one or more inner tiers of building blocks or bricks, of a window cleaners safety belt anchor with a head inset window opening, a web-portion integral with said head and extending obliquely in a horizontal plane between the parting surfaces of adjacentblocks of both said outer tier and one or more said inner tiers and two or more arms lateral-1y projecting-from said Web-portion and having each one or more end lips to lock about the edges of said blocks, whereby said anchor'is'secured to four or more of said blocks.
2. An anchor bolt for use Witha window cleaners safety belt adapted to be secured to the bricks of two or more tiers of brick in the Wall about a Window-openingcomprising Wardly fromsaid bridge, andrhaving lipped:
arms extendingtherefrom at. right angles to each otherr r 3.. An lanchor bolt for use ith a Window cle'aners safety belt and adapted to clasp at least three courses of brick in the Wall aboutawindow"opening, comprising an anchor head .to secure the safety belt; a Web extendingdiagonally rearWardly, said web having a plurality of lipped arms, at least 4 tWo'of -Which extend at right angles relatively, to each other and which extend out beyond the confines of a single brick into position to clasp -ax neighboring tier. of brickr- In witness whereof, I" have signed my name to" this. specification.
