Description

1'. DANIELSION AWL. APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 13, 1920.

Jfiaizwlwiz,
UNITED STATES JACOB DANIELSON, OF BUTTE, MONTANA.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 2, 1921.
Application filed September 13, 1920. Serial No. 409,865.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAooB DANIELSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Butte, in the county of Silverbow and State of Montana, have invented a new and-useful Awl, of which the following is a specifica tion. I
This invention relates to sewing awls, and it is the primary object of the invention to provide a novel form of awl having means forming a part thereof, for supporting a spool of sewing thread or the like, thereby rendering the awl exceptionally handy and easy to operate.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an awl having an integral spool. support formed at one end thereof, the spool support being constructed to clear the hand of the operator, when the device is in use,
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the com- Reterrin to the drawin in detail the awl includes a body portion 5 preferably circular in cross section and formed of suitable rigid material, one end of the awl extending at rightangles to the body portion 5 thereof, as at 6, the right angled end 6 being tapered toward its extremity to pro vide piercing end 7, there being provided an opening "8 intermediate the ends of the portions 6, the opening providing the eye of the awl, and through which the thread which is indicated by the reference character 9, passes.
The opposite extremity of the body portion 5 includes a right angled section 10, which is relatively long as compared to the right angled end 6, to provide a combined spool support and handle portion, a spool being shown as supported thereon, and held into position as by means of the cotter pin 11 which extends through a suitable opening provided in the right angled section 10. which cotter pin contacts with one end of the spool, which in the present showing is indicated by the reference character 12.
Formed in the body portion 5 at point adjacent to the inner extremity of the right angled end 6, is an opening indicated at 13, which opening accommodates the thread 9 to maintain the thread 9 free of: twists or snarls, to insure the true operation of the awl.
In'the use of the device, it is obvious that the operator may grasp the body portion 5, the right angled portion 10 thereof, extending laterally from the body portion, and to a position free of the operators wrist.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is An awl including a body portion having a right angled extremity, the right angled extremity being tapered throughout its length to provide a piercing end, said piercing end having an eye formed therein, said body portion having an eye formed adjacent to the right angled end, the opposite extremity of the handle. portion extending at right angles thereto, and extending laterally with I respect to the first mentioned right angled portion, the right angled portion adapted to provide a combined handle and spool support.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JACOB DANIELSON. Witnesses A. B. KEITH, PAULINE Sco'r'r.
