ATTORNEY PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN MAGUIRE, OF ATTLEBOBO, MASSACHUSETTS.
HAT-PROTECTOR.
' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 2, 1921.
Application filed December 16, 1920. Serial No. 431,087.
T 0 all to have it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN Macoinn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Attlebore, in the county of Bristol and State of idassachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in HatProtectors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in ladies hats and similar head gear in which hat pins are accustomed to be employed.
The essential objects of my invention are to guide the pin in its insertion into the hat; to locate the insertion of the pin at .a predetermined point so as to prevent a multiplicity of perforations in the hat body; to protect the material of the hat from accidental perforations; and to attain these ends in a structure which will not deface the hat body but will be ornamental thereto and which is easily engageable and disengageable from the hat body and adaptable for use not only with short pins but with pins of greater length than the diameter of the hat body.
With the above purposes in view my invention consists primarily in such parts and in such combinations of parts as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings which form a partof this specification Figure 1 is a side elevation of a hat embodying my invention,
Fig. 2, a section of the same on line 22 of Fig. 1,
Figs. 3 and 4, front and rear elevations respectively of the guiding devices removed from the hat, and
Fig. 5, an enlarged partial section on line 22 of Fig. 1.
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the views.
In the drawings 7 is a brim, 8 the side wall and 9 the top of a ladys hat embodying my invention.
In an intermediate portion of the wall 8 at diametrically opposite point-s thereof are circular holes or perforations 11 adapted to receive a device now to be described. A circular plate 13 comprising a body 14 and an inclined peripheral flange 15. Centrally of the plate 14 is a tubular extended portion 17 provided with a rounded mouth portion 18 and having an external thread 19. The tubular portion 17 passes loosely through the hole 11 and the body 14 has its entire face seated against the outer face of the hat wall 8. The opening or passage 20 constituting the bore of the sleeve or extension 17 is purposed for the slidable reception of a hat pin comprising a shaft or body portion 21 and a head 22. A member is provided to cooperate with the described plate comprising a circular plate 24 provided with a centrally located sleeve 25 having. an internal thread 26 adapted to loosely engage the thread 19 of the extension 17 The plate 24 at its central portion has a flaring mouth 28. The sleeve 25 is also located within the perfora tion 11 and is movable over the top 17 when the plate. 24 is rotated manually by the thumb and finger of the operator which engage the milled peripheral surfaces ofthe plate. The rotation of the latter plate brings its face in contact with the body 8. The portion of the plate 24 intermediate the marginal portion and the sleeve 25 is elevated somewhat and spaced from the wall of the hat as at 32. I
One guiding device only has been described in detail, but it will be understood that the guiding devices upon both sides of the hat are identical in construction, and the description of one will serve for both.
In applying a long hat pin to the described hat the wearer directs the point to- I ward the plate 13 in a general manner and if the point contacts with the flange 15 it is guided to the body 14 of the plate and the flange and body thus prevent any accidental defacement of the hat body 8. In locating the opening or tubular passage 20 the pin is further guided by the rounded mouth 18. The pin shaft 21 is then pushed horizontally through the hair and through the opening 20 to the opposite guide member. In locating the latter opening or passage the operator is assisted by the flaring mouth 18 of the member 24 and thus the point of the pin during its progress through the hat is prevented from piercing the wall of the hat in the area covered by the plate 24.
It will be observed that the construction of the guiding devices is such as to facilitate the mounting of the same in the hat and their disengagement therefrom if at any time desired.
I claim 1. In a device of the type set forth, a hat having an opening therein, a thin circular plate embodying a body portion and an inclined peripheral flange and a substantially central tubular extended portion having a rounded mouth and an external thread, said tubular portion being passed loosely through said opening with the entire face of the body portion seated against the outer face of the wall of the hat, and a cooperating member 1 embodying a circular plate with centrally located sleeve having an internal thread adapted to loosely engage the thread of said extension, said sleeve being located within the opening in the hat and movable over the extension.
2. Ina device of the type set forth, a hat havin an onenin therein athin circular 1 plate embodying a body portion and an inplate intermediate its marginal edge and the sleeve being elevated and spaced from the walls of the hat.
3. In a device of the type set forth, a hat having an opening therein, a thin circular plate embodying a body portion and an in clined peripheral flange and a substantially central tubular extended portion having a rounded month and an external thread, said tubular portion being passed loosely through said opening with the entire face of the body portion seated against the outer face of the wall of the hat, and a cooperating member embodying a circular plate with acentrally located sleeve having an internal thread adapted to loosely engage the thread of said extension, said sleeve being located within the opening in the hat and movable over the extension, the portion of the last-named plate intermediate its marginal edge and the sleeve being elevated and spaced from the walls 01 the l1at,'said last-named plate hav ing a flaring mouth.
In testimony whereofI have affixed my signature.
a JOHN MAGUIRE.
