IMPROVEMENT IN' BUTTONFASTENINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,608, dated May 6, i373 application led March 28, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTON BRooKMANN, of
Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of `and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and being a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a stud, its shank and toggle. Fig. 2 is a similar View of the combined metal and rubber washer. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the stud and Washer together, inclosing a section of the fabric through which the shank passes. Fig. 4 is a cross-section of the stud and washer, showing the latter compressed preparatory to disengaging the stud.

rl`he nature of this invention relates to an improvement in fastenings for buttons and studs of that class which have metallic shanks designed to pass through eyelets in the'fabrics to which they are attached; the object being to provide a secure fastening, which will always be tight when applied to fabrics of various thickness, readily applied and removed, and which will not injure the fabric. The invention consists in a button or stud provided with a slotted shank, in the extremity of which a toggle is pivoted, and in connection therewith a bell-shaped elastic washer attached to a metallic Washer, having a central opening to pass the shank of tle stud and its toggle, when the latter forms a prolongation of the shank.
In the drawing, A represents a button or stud, from one side of which a slotted shank, a, projects. b is a bar or toggle pivoted at its middle between the outer ends of the slotted shank.. B is a metallic counter-sunk Washer, to the under face, of which a bell-shaped elastic rubber washer, G, is attached by stretching its smaller open end over a curved flange formed about the opening in the center of the metallic Washer. The diameter of the larger end of the rubber Washer is a trile less than that of thek button or stud.
To apply the button, the toggle is turned to form 'a prolongation of the shank and inserted through an eyelet in the fabric, and also through the opening in the washer, which is then compressed at one side until the toggle is free at its inner end to come out of the slot, as seen in Fig. 4, when the pressure on the Washer is relaxed, which then expands until the metallic Washer is arrested by the toggle, upon which a light but constant pressure is kept. By compressing the washer the stud maybe removed in the mannerjust described for its insertion.
The toggle maybe arranged to come through the button and appear on the outside, in which case the shank is placed on the metal Washer. The but-ton should then be countersunk or recessed to receive the toggle.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The metallic Washer and elastic bell-shaped washer O in connection, with the button or stud A having the toggle b pivoted in its slotted shank a, substantially as shown and set forth.
